President Obama Campaigns for Free E-Books

The Associated Press, along with leading business news outlets including the U.S. News & World Report, ran a story in late April explaining that President Barack Obama is pushing for more young people to have access to e-books. During a press conference held at a public library in one of the poorest neighborhood in Washington, DC, the nation’s capital, President Obama revealed the new plan to provide more than $250 million worth of free e-books to low-income students.

Project ConnectEd

The e-book initiative is part of a larger and more comprehensive project called ConnectEd, which is intended to promote education across the USA by taking advantage of digital technology and Internet connectivity. Legendary publishers of educational materials, including Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, and Penguin Random House are among the major industry leaders who are going to help supply easier, more widespread access to digital learning resources and school books in e-book format.

Another component of the program is a push to get library cards into the hands of more kids, particularly those who struggle against poverty. In pursuit of that goal, the White House has already secured commitments from 30 cities and counties across the United States, that have agreed to issue free library cards to young people.

Reading to Learn in the Digital Age

We’re going to provide millions of e-books online,” explained President Obama, “so that they’re available for young people who maybe don’t have as many books at home or don’t always have access to a full stock of reading materials.” He also emphasized to students who were in attendance at the announcement the importance of reading.

Obama described reading, in fact, as a key to success in life, regardless of what students want to learn or do. Touting the value of learning and of leveraging the power and convenience of digital transmission of knowledge, Obama said that the best way to read and learn in the age of the Internet is to be sure “you’re plugged in.”

Progressing into the Innovative Era of E-Books

During a conversation with dozens of young students, President Obama admitted that when he was a student he enjoyed reading traditional paper and ink books. He explained how it can be fun to bookmark pages, highlight sections, or otherwise mark up the pages of a conventional book. He said that today’s students, however, need to recognize as Obama put it, that “the truth of the matter is we live in a digital age.” He also pointed how that e-books are a whole lot easier to carry.

Of course there are also digital e-book readers and apps available these days that enable you to bookmark pages and even highlight passages or make margin notes while reading an e-book. So thanks to advancements in e-book technology, you can now have the best of both worlds – the pleasure Obama pointed out of traditional printed books delivered to you in handy electronic format.

Closing the Gap Between the Rich and Poor

President Obama went on to say that making electronic books available for free to those who may not have lots of books or be able to afford to buy the books that they want will help to close the gap between the rich and the poor in terms of literacy and learning. E-books can even the playing field, in other words, by giving less fortunate kids the opportunity to read that all people – particularly young students – want and deserve.

One of the primary goals of Free-eBooks.net, since its launch many years ago before e-books were even familiar to most consumers, has been to promote literacy across all demographics and economic levels, with free and equal access for everyone. Tens of millions of absolutely free e-books have been downloaded by young people and adults alike, in dozens of countries and multiple languages around the globe, thanks to the unique Free-eBooks.net model.
