Remember when you would borrow a book you saw laying around in the house of your friend/aunt/cousin? Reading in those days was simply a matter of seeing something you thought you might like and borrowing or buying it where it stood.

You may have noticed that there is a lot going on in the eBook industry lately.
For one, back in April, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a suit against Apple and five of the top U.S. publishing houses for what they term “colluding to set eBook prices and sales models”. This was in response to an agreement formed between Apple and those 5 publishers to set eBook prices as per what is known as “the agency model”. This enabled the publishers to set their prices at the level they wanted to set, and dictate to the eBook
Barnes and Noble announced their new Nook Tablet this week. A friend of mine mentioned to me soon after we saw the announcement that it has email which was a “glaring omission” from the Kindle Fire. That made me realize that the general view of the Kindle family is still very skewed and very misunderstood.
This can never be said too much – the Kindle Fire was never intended to be a general purpose tablet at all. The Kindle Fire is all about Amazon Prime content – not anything else. There was mention made of an app store
I was intrigued to see Barnes and Noble release their new reading-specific nook™ recently. Why? Because their success with the nook color™ seemed to be an exclamation point to me. One which seemed to signal to me and others that they needed to focus their expenditures elsewhere because even though people were loving the idea of the nook™, its feature and offerings, a lot of already-invested Kindle owners (like myself) would not commit to making a switch unless they presented some hard-sell benefits and advantages. I was wrong.
