Evelyn Sharp in 1943

Brigadier General Evelyn Sharp, commander of the 99th Air Group (The Fifinellas), could barely stay in place on the tarmac as the rear cargo ramp of the U.S.

Air Force C-142T heavy cargo plane came down. The five other women waiting with her on the tarmac were equally excited with anticipation and cheered up in unison when a group of women became visible at the top of the ramp.

‘’These girls are all ex-Fifinel as!’’ exclaimed Lieutenant Colonel Florene Miller, the commanding officer of the 172nd Fighter Squadron, the Black Witches. ‘’I recognize Alice Wegener, my old aircraft crew chief, among them.’
