STARLIGHT UNBOUND
dragging up images from the dream —the house, the families, the endless void. What does she know?
“What do you mean?” he asked, his voice strained.
Lyra’s fingers trailed along the edge of the easel. “I don’t know. Not yet.” She met his eyes, something uncertain flickering beneath her defiance. “But I think we ’re connected to this. To all of it.”
Before he could respond, she turned and motioned toward a narrow door at the far end of the room. “Come on. There’s something you need to see.”
Lucien eyed the door warily. It creaked open, revealing another staircase leading into pitch darkness.
He hesitated. The pull that had guided him this far twisted into something more intense—something closer to fear. What am I doing here?
“Where does it lead?” His voice was quieter now.
Lyra rested a hand against the doorframe, considering him. “Just follow me. ”
Her calm certainty sent a shiver down his spine. He didn't move. “You keep talking like this is destiny or fate or whatever you want to call it, but I don ’t even know why I’m here. I don’t know you. And I don’t know if I can trust you.” His voice came out sharper than intended, raw with doubt.
Lyra turned fully to face him, eyes narrowing slightly. “You don’t trust me, but you ’re still here.”
Lucien opened his mouth, but no words came. He didn’t have an answer.
“You could’ve ignored the calling card,” she continued. “You could’ve stayed home. But you didn ’t. Something brought you here, Lucien.”
His name in her mouth made him flinch. There was no accusation in her tone, no pressure —just certainty.
He clenched his fists. “I don’t know what brought me here.”
Lyra’s expression softened, but her voice stayed firm. “Then go. Walk away. You ’re free to leave, but if you do... you’ll always wonder what was behind that door. ”
The words landed like a challenge.
Lucien turned, the jagged lines and chaotic patterns of the murals echoed the turmoil inside him, the same unease that had brought him here. It was louder now, harder to ignore.
Once I step through, I can’t go back.
Lyra’s voice tore through his hesitation. “It’s not about the door, Lucien. It’s about what’s inside you. The part of you that knows this world isn’t what it seems. The part that’s been pulling you here all along.”
