STARLIGHT UNBOUND

The coordinates burned in his mind, an irresistible pull.

A humorless chuckle escaped him. “I must be crazy.”

But his feet were already moving.

The coordinates led him to an old maintenance entrance, its rusted metal door partially concealed behind a tangle of overgrown vines. Lucien hesitated, scanning the empty street. Everything about this felt wrong, and yet—he pushed the door open. It groaned on its hinges, the sound splitting the quiet.

Inside, the air was thick with damp, laced with the sharp tang of mildew. A narrow staircase spiraled downward, its edges worn smooth from years of use. Lucien descended, his footsteps echoing against the walls. The black disk in his pocket felt heavier with each step, as though it were anchoring him to something he couldn’t yet understand.

At the bottom, he stepped into a vast, open room —and stopped.

Murals stretched across the walls in swirls of color and defiance. Figures reached for the stars, shattered chains lay in painted heaps, and abstract shapes twisted together in bold, sweeping strokes. Some of the art was hopeful, vibrant. Others felt darker, like warnings left behind.

In the center of the room, an easel stood beneath the light, its canvas blank except for a constellation sketched in precise lines—the same pattern etched into the black disk.

Lucien moved closer, his breath slowed as his fingers hovered over the canvas. Is this hers?

He spun, pulse spiking as a figure emerged from the shadows.

Lyra stepped into the dim light. Her eyes locked onto his, a mixture of surprise and guarded curiosity. “I didn’t think you’d actually come.”

Lucien froze, his mind racing. “I... I wasn’t sure what to expect.”

She studied him, then crossed her arms. “And yet, here you are.”

Silence stretched between them, thick and electric.

Lucien swallowed hard. “Why did you give me this?”

A faint smirk tugged at the corner of Lyra ’s lips. “Because you felt it, didn’t you? At the gallery. ”

“I don’t even know what I’m looking for.”

She stepped closer, her voice gentler now. “Maybe it’s not about looking for something. Maybe it’s about remembering.”

The words struck him harder than they should have. His thoughts churned,
