Chapter 8
Harold was nervous. News of the accidental death of his two trusted
counselors had reached him. Mario had had an accident while riding and Xander had been killed and robbed by a red-headed girl from the Purple Rose. He really needed some advice now, some clue to what was going on. He needed new counselors. But who? Maybe his daughter, Milly. She was smart and he could rely on her advice until he found someone else whom he could really trust. Harold sent for Milly. This made her uncomfortable as she didn’t know why she had been summoned. Her father had never asked for her before. Maybe he knew that she was behind it all and wanted to punish her? She would find out soon but until then she would remain calm. She had to keep her wits about if she wanted to get out of this messy situation.
- Yes father, did you send for me? Milly asked in her most innocent voice, not a sign on her face betraying her guilt.
- Yes…I need your advice from now on. As you maybe know, and here the king made a pause to analyze his daughter, my two counselors, both of them, are dead.
- Oh, Milly feigned surprise, really? Both? How? Any suspects?- No, why, do you know anything that I don’t? And the old sly king checked his daughter again with a bit of suspicion this time.- No, no. But both died? I just thought it was weird. What happened to them?
- Well, Xander was killed and robbed by a prostitute and Mario had a riding accident.
- Oh, how unfortunate. And Milly pretended to be sorry for them. And so now I guess you need my advice… she said relieved that Roman had done a nice and clean job without implying her in it in any way. She was off the hook.
- Yes, yes. You are my counselor from now on. What do you have to say? Asked king Harold expecting gratitude from her.
- What about John? How come you didn’t choose him? I thought he was your favorite, not me.

- Hmm, how observant of you. Well, in case I die, he will be king, not you. But you are the smart one, I’ll give you that. He can’t even judge for himself, let alone advise me.
- Then why him, father? Milly had a sudden outburst, not being able to refrain herself. Why not me, am I not worthy to rule your kingdom?- Slow down, Milly! I don't intend to die any time soon so it doesn’t really matter. If things turn out the way I planned them, I will be ruling Karaland for a long time coming. And you will be my number one advisor. Doesn’t this sound good?
- Oh, yes, sure, thank you father for this honor and opportunity to prove my worth to you. Thank you, you won't be disappointed. And she smiled an honest smile. She was really happy with how things turned out. Being her father's counselor was as good as ruling the kingdom. She would convince him to do what she wished without having to get rid of him. She loved the old fox, it was her father. With Xander and Mario out of the way, she was now her father's choice in every important decision concerning the kingdom. She was delighted. She was grateful that Roman had done such a great job.
- Ok, thank you Milly, that is all for now.
- Thanks father, and Milly got out of the room feeling happy and important and full of herself.
