The Child Who Listens
Mary's second child, Elam, is born on a warm June morning. He grows up sturdy and thoughtful, a boy who works hard and speaks little. But from the time he can walk, he shows a habit that Mary recognizes instantly:
He pauses.
Not out of laziness. Not out of distraction. But out of attention.
When the wind shifts, he stops. When a bird calls strangely, he tilts his head. When the woods fall silent, he listens.
