Mary never tells him about the hum she heard as a girl. She never even tells her husband. But she sees the same stillness in Elam that once lived in her.
And she wonders; quietly, privately, whether curiosity can be inherited the way eye color is.
A Moment in the Woods When Elam is nine, he goes to gather kindling at the edge of the Miller property. The woods are green and full of birdsong. He hums to himself as he works.
Then he stops.

Not because he heard anything. Not because he saw anything.
Because something in the air feels… different.
A faint pressure. A subtle tension. Like the moment before a storm, but without clouds.
He stands very still. He listens. He waits.
Nothing happens.
But the moment lodges in him, the way the hum once lodged in Mary.
He returns home with the kindling, but he keeps glancing back at the trees.
Mary Recognizes the Look
That evening, as Elam helps her peel potatoes, Mary sees it:
A faraway look. A question forming without words.
