7. Shadow Work

A few days later, Mark and Layla were relaxing together on their shared bedroom blanket. Mark sat propped against the headboard with a book Layla had lent him about hugging meditations. Beside him, Maia was immersed in a different world, turning the pages of a new novel by her favourite romance author.

The peace and quiet was soothing until it was disturbed by the vibration of Maia's mobile phone. Glancing at the screen, she smiled. "It's Dorian," she said, her voice carrying an unspoken question.

"It's okay, go ahead," said Mark.

She gratefully caressed his thigh, then slipped out of bed and padded to the living room. She left the bedroom door ajar, as if to say that she had nothing to hide. The murmur of her greeting floated in, warm and familiar. "Hey... Yes, I was just reading ..."

Mark stared at the open page of his book, but the words dissolved before his eyes. His attention was magnetically pulled to the low murmur of conversation from the other room. He heard Maia laugh — a soft, intimate sound he knew well — but now it was being given to someone else. A heavy lump seemed to form in his stomach.

What is this? he asked himself, placing a hand on his abdomen. The feeling was confusing and muddled.

A familiar heat followed the heaviness. Jealousy. I'm afraid she's giving him what used to be mine. But that wasn't the whole truth; it felt too simple.

He listened more closely to his feelings. The sweetness of her voice showed that she was enjoying herself. She wasn't performing; she was just being herself. Another sensation washed over him then, deeper and lonelier. It was a hollow ache in his chest; a yearning.

You want that, a quiet voice inside him whispered. You want someone to call you late just to hear your voice. You want to feel desired ...

This was envy. He longed for the excitement of a new connection that could make him glow from within as well. His jealousy said, I'm losing her. His envy asked, Why does she get to have that and I don't? These feelings twisted together in his gut, forming an uneasy knot of insecurity and frustration.

He closed the book. The irony was bitter. Here he was, reading about sacred connection, yet feeling utterly disconnected in his own bedroom. He tried to breathe into his heart centre, as suggested in the book, but the memory of his ex stirred within him: her thrilling chaos, and the hollow certainty that he had merely been a backdrop for her – a bank account and stable ground for her to dance upon. The fear wasn't about Maia leaving him like his ex did. It was the older, deeper wound: You will be used for your steadiness, and then made a fool of when real intimacy happens elsewhere.

He felt the emotional turmoil inside: a storm of past and present, fear and desire, triggered by the sound of his girlfriend's happy, intimate laughter in the next room. This was inner work: sitting with it all, feeling awful and desperately trying to tame the monsters without letting them tear him apart.

The call ended with a final, warm chuckle and a soft, "Sleep well." Mark heard the sigh of the sofa cushions as Maia stood up. He quickly picked up his book again, a pointless masquerade before himself.

She stood in the doorway, barely dressed and beautiful, backlit by the soft light of the living room, smiling, relaxed and luminous. Leaning against the frame, she said, "He was telling me about this incredible forest walk he took today." She shook her head; her wonder was undeniable. "I really like him, you know?"

Each word was like a pebble being dropped into the murky depths of Mark's insides. I really like him. It was an affirmation, the truth he'd asked for, and it burned.

He slowly put the book down. He couldn't fake it. The silence stretched out and grew heavy. Maia crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed. "Hey," she said. "What's going on?"

It was the invitation he both needed and dreaded. He opened his mouth, but a tangled web of emotions — jealousy, envy and old shame — tied his tongue in knots. He looked at his hands.

"I heard you laughing," he started. "It sounded ... really intimate." He chanced a glance at her. "And then you said you like him. It just ... it didn't feel good. It felt like ..." He grasped for the shadow, pulling it into the light. "It felt like a reminder that I'm the safe, predictable one. The one in the bedroom reading the instruction manual while you're out there ... living the story."

The spirit of his past had completely taken over the room. His words spilled out, unpolished and unfiltered. "With my ex, I was the reliable one. She'd have her adventures and I was just the home base from which she'd run her life. My value lay in my stability. My punishment for being stable was being boring. Being left alone in the end." His voice cracked. "So when I hear you laugh like that with him, this old tape plays: 'You're doing it again.' You're the useful guy. And the real, exciting connection is happening somewhere else."

He wasn't accusing her; he was showing her the wound. Maia didn't flinch. She didn't defend or justify herself. She listened, her eyes wide and soft, absorbing the storm. When he had finished, she allowed a moment of silence to pass between them.

"Oh, Mark," she breathed. She took his hand, her touch solid and warm. "That woman... she used you. She took advantage of your kindness. That was her failure and her meanness."

She slid closer, her warmth making him feel her presence as she held his gaze. "What I feel for Dorian ... it's added. It's a beautiful, separate stream that feeds me. But you ..." She placed her hand on the centre of his chest. "You are my river, my home, my foundation, my chosen life. Yes, you are both my safety and my spark. With you, they aren't separate things. You also satisfy my desire. Every single day."

Her words were like balm for the painful wound of neglect. But she didn't stop there. She felt the other layer, the yearning.

"And Mark ... it's okay," she said. "It's more than okay that you heard that and wanted it for yourself."

He looked at her, stunned. Had she just invited him to want more?

"I do," he whispered, afraid of his own admission. "I want to experience that, too."

A gleam of recognition came into Maia's eyes. "Then let's find that for you. I suppose it's probably more difficult for men," she acknowledged. "The world doesn't yet make much space for men to seek gentle, intimate connections. But our world can."

She took a breath. "My new friend, Chloe. She's kind, she's emotionally aware – and she would probably understand the idea we're trying to build. I know she loves lots of cuddles and sometimes feels lonely, as she has been single for a few years. Would you like me to talk with her? Seeing if she'd be interested in meeting you, just to see how your chemistry is?"

The offer was so generous and utterly surprising, that it left Mark speechless. The problem was no longer the intimacy between Maia and Dorian, but an incomplete, unbalanced network. His partner, whom he feared losing, was offering to help him build his part of it, so he wouldn't be left behind.

"I know that my job isn't to police your phone calls, but to heal the part of me that hears your happiness and thinks it's my funeral."

Maia nodded, "Yes. And my job is to keep showing you who you are to me. And," she added, her lips curving into a tender, determined smile, "to help you find what you need out there, too."

She leaned in and kissed him passionately — a seal on their new agreement. That kiss lit the tinder of everything they had just unearthed: the fear, the yearning and the raw, honest ache. His touch was not demanding her as a possession, but celebrating the honesty between them. She responded with open surrender. They made LOVE with a new intensity, tenderly relearning each other's passion and vulnerability. Each touch felt like a silent vow: I see your shadow, and I still choose you. My freedom is right here, with you, in the honest, wide openness of our hearts.

Later that night, Mark got up and added some more points to their growing list of skills to improve.
