MET THE RAIN: SPENT THE NIGHT IN A FARMHOUSE (Seven character, Yulshi )

The rhyme is chin/shin/shin/shin/in; tones match and parallel expression occurs in the second and third couplets. It is unclear where exactly Kim Sakkat passes the night. Some texts read that the eaves touch the ground. Is it a tiny room stuck under the eaves, an attic, or a space off the fire flue in the kitchen?

The rafters are twisted; dust is stuck to the eaves;

the space is so tight I can barely squeeze my body in.

All my life I’ve tried not to bow;

but tonight I cannot even stretch my legs.

The smoke comes in through the rat holes; everything is lacquered black.

The poky window is blocked with straw, there is no burgeoning day.

Still my quarters kept the damp off clothes and hat;

I’ll say a quiet word of thanks to the master as I leave.
