SINGING TO MY SHADOW(Seven character, Yulshi)

Also attributed to Nam Sanggyo (1783-1866), an official who was martyred in the Catholic persecution of 1866. The rhyme is kong/nong/yong/pong/chong; tones match and parallel expression is clear in the second and third couplets.

You follow when I go out and when I come home;

     what a polite presence you are!

So like me, but not really me.

When moonlight slants across the hill,

     your gross goblin shape is scary.

When midday sunlight illumines the yard,

     your dwarf form is funny.

I look for you in bed but cannot find you.

When I turn around to seek you in lamplight,

     you’re suddenly at my side.

In your heart you love me, but you never have anything to say.

In the absence of bright light you hide your presence.
