The XI Chapter

The Passing of My Grandfather

Part 1

The following day, after my parents had arrived at my grandparents' home, it was morning when my mother was spotted wandering around the bushes and garden at the back of the house, preparing to discuss my grandfather.

Indeed, it was morning, and my mother, along with my grandmother, was strolling through the bushes and garden behind the house while my father spent some time with his crew and their wives at the hotel located not too far away.

However, my mother was already aware of my grandfather's passing, as it was my grandmother who had informed her last night.

“Sweetheart, do you remember that area behind the house?" My grandmother asked my mother now.

“Of course, mother!” My mother responded. “Why do you ask?” My mother questioned. “I asked because I thought you might have forgotten,” my grandmother replied.

“I indeed spent a lot of years outdoors, but I haven't forgotten everything,” my mother assured her. Well, as was customary, the melodious sounds of Birds could be heard, as if they were singing.

A gentle breeze blew, causing the leaves of the trees and bushes to rustle, as if they were offering praises to God.

Although my mother and grandmother felt sorrow over my grandfather's death, it did not imply that they would spend the remainder of their lives engulfed in grief. “What a beautiful day!” My mother exclaimed. “I feel so fortunate to breathe the air of Jamaica once again after spending a couple of years in Italy,” she told my grandmother. “You see that tree?” My grandmother asked her. “Oh my God! That tree!” My mother exclaimed. “That was the tree I fell from while my friends and I were climbing it to pick mangoes, right?”

“Yes, I remember that tree. Why?” My mother replied. “What a humorous life!”

“It is both beautiful and short at the same time,” my grandmother remarked.

“Your father was alive on that day!”

“Sadly, people did not anticipate that your father would see you for the last time the day you departed Kingston for Sorrento,” my grandmother added.

“It is true that my father, whom I cherished deeply, has passed away, and I cannot alter that fact. However, I think there is still much to gain, as God has not yet taken you away.”

“I suppose when they mentioned that God never burdens you with several pains simultaneously, it must hold some truth,” my mother responded.

“That's it, sweetheart!”

“You are telling me the truth!” My grandmother told my mother again and smiled.

In that place, my mother and grandmother took some time to stroll through the yard, admiring the trees and flowers that adorned the garden as they conversed.

However, my father had departed a few hours earlier to meet his crew and wives at the nearby hotel.

For my mother, revisiting her Youth was a memorable experience, particularly in the home where she was raised alongside her parents, family, and friends.
