Part 11

Shortly thereafter, just a few minutes later, my dad and mom finally reached my mom's parents' house after dropping off the crew and their wives at a nearby hotel.

My mom's parents' house was situated in Kingston and Red Hills, a few miles away.

“Isn't that someone knocking at the door?” My grandmother remarked while she was in the dining room preparing a meal. “I heard the noise as well.”

“Just a moment! I'll go check, alright?” My mother's cousin responded. Sure enough, my mom's cousin stood up from the table and went to answer the door.

“Where are they now?”

“Do you think they might be asleep?” My dad asked my mom as they knocked for a few seconds without anyone responding. “I can't believe that; it shouldn't take this long!" My mother replied. When my mother's cousin opened the front door, she was taken aback, not expecting my mother to arrive.

“Oh, cousin!”

“You're back!”

“Is that really you?” My mother's cousin exclaimed to my mother. “Cousin! I'm here!”

“That’s me!”

“How have you been?” My mother replied.

“I'm doing well.”

“Thank you.” My mother's cousin said. “Mr. Legrand! Welcome back!” She also greeted my father. “Hi! Thank you!”

“Where have you been?”

“My wife and I were knocking for a few seconds,” my father explained. Then, my father and mother stepped inside the house. “Please, come in!” My mother's cousin invited them. “Thank you!” My mother responded. “The suitcases...”

“Let me assist you with the suitcases, okay?” My mother's cousin offered help.

“Sure.”

“Alright, thank you.” My father expressed his gratitude. “Where is my mother?” My mother asked her cousin about my grandmother.

“Your mother is in the kitchen in the dining room; she's preparing dinner,” her cousin replied.

Quickly, my mother hurried to the kitchen to see her mother. While my grandmother was cooking, she heard someone call her. “Mother!” My mother called out loud. When my grandmother turned around, she was shocked and overjoyed to see her daughter.

“Oh my God! Look who is here!”

“My baby is back!”

“My sweet baby!”

“Is it really you?” My grandmother responded as she approached my mother and kissed her.

“Mother, did you know how much I missed you?”

“How have you been?”

“Honestly, I apologize for being away for so long without visiting you.” My mother responded.

“But now I'm here, and we can enjoy some time together." She also asked my grandmother, "I'm doing well, and you?"

“I’m fine! I'm happy you're back!”

“You?”

“Welcome home!”

“I'm preparing a meal! What would you like to eat?” My grandmother inquired.

“Absolutely! I can't remember the last time I enjoyed your own cooking.”

“I'm doing fine, thank you.” My mother replied. “I'm pleased to hear you're doing well too.”

“Are you happy now?” My mother asked her. “Oh! Yes!” My grandmother responded and hugged her again. Meanwhile, my father and my mother's cousin were bringing their luggage into the house.

And it was while my mother and grandmother were engaged in cooking and conversing. My father, along with my mother's cousin, entered the kitchen.

“Legrand! You're here!”

“How are you?”

“I'm glad to see you, too!” My grandmother said as my father approached her to greet her.

“Reybeka!”

“How are you doing my love?”

“I'm doing well, and you?”

“Yes, it has been quite a while.”

“I'm happy to see you!” My father responded. “I'm doing well! And I'm pleased to hear you are too!”

“Are you hungry?”

“I'm in the kitchen cooking! What would you like to eat?” My grandmother inquired, asking my father if he was interested in a meal. “Absolutely, I'm hungry!”

“But what kind of food do you have?”

“What are you preparing?” My father replied to her. “She's making Jamaican food! Naturally!”

“What else?” My mother's cousin chimed in and laughed. But the way my mother’s cousin expressed it caused both my mother and grandmother to chuckle as she did. “She's correct!”

“What else?” My mother replied instead.
