Part 3

A few moments later, my father exited the room to head downstairs. Upon hearing the door open, I quickly ran to the opposite side. Throughout their conversation, I had been eavesdropping from behind the door.

Later that evening, my mother entered my room to inform me that she and my father would be leaving Sorrento for Kingston in the morning. “Ley?”

“Hun?”

“Are you asleep or still awake?”

“Can you please open the door for me?” My mother asked as she knocked.

“I'm coming, mother!” I replied. “Hi, Hun!”

“What are you up to?”

“I thought you were asleep since I knocked, but I didn't hear a response,” she explained.

“Hi, mother!”

“I had already fallen asleep.”

“I didn't hear you knocking.”

“Why did you come to my room so late?”

“Are you alright?” I replied and asked as she stepped inside my room. “Listen to me, Hun!”

“There's something important I need to share with you,” she told me. “What is it, mother?” I inquired. “Your father and I are leaving Sorrento for Kingston in the morning. Would you like to join us?” She asked. “What?”

“You’re leaving?” I replied and wondered. “Yes, I want to visit my family during Carnival season,” she told me. “Really? That's wonderful! But I already have other plans,” I replied. “Are you sure you want to stay by yourself?”

“Will you be alright?” She asked.

“I guess I will be alright.”

“Yes, mother.” I assured her. “Okay, Hun.”

“You can stay, but please be cautious!” She advised me. “Your father and I won't worry about you that much since you're old enough to make your own choices, but there are conditions.”

“You know our rules, right?” She also told me. “Yes, mother!”

“You're right! Thank you!” I responded. “You're welcome, sweetheart!” She spoke.

Shortly after our conversation, my mother then stood up from the bed to head outside.

And just as she was about to leave, I said something else. “Mother!” I called out.

“Yes, sweetheart!” She answered. “I'm truly sorry that I can't accompany you to Jamaica tomorrow, but I hope to visit again sometime.”

“And don't worry.”

“I'll be okay, alright?” I assured her. “No problem, Hun!” She replied. “Your father and I will miss you, but at least we know where you will be, right?” She also told me with a smile.

“Thank you, and good night!” I replied. “You're welcome! I love you too!”

“Good night!” She responded.
