Part 6
When both my father and mother came back to the gathering, my father hurried over to greet my grandparents, and my mother’s friends.
“Hello, everyone!” He told my grandparents and others. “Are you all having a good time?” He asked my mother's relatives and friends who sat down.
“Who are you?” My grandfather asked him. “My name Legrand Wendavik!”
“I’m from Italy!” He introduced himself. “It's a pleasure to meet you!” He added.
“I want to congratulate you and your wife on raising such a lovely daughter,” he expressed to my grandfather. “Oh! Thank you!” Both of my grandparents responded despite their advanced age.
At this moment, my mother was a little bit surprised that my father addressed my grandparents and her friends there. “What are you doing?” She asked my father. “Stop it!”
“Will you stop? You are embarrassing me!”
“Did I give you permission to speak to my parents?” She asked him again.
“Don't you realize you're getting too close?” She admonished him. “A man who respects you should also respect your family, right?” He replied.
“But are you, my man? No, you are not!”
“I don't even know you.”
“Can you stop now?” She requested. Despite my mother urged my father to stop what he was doing to save her from embarrassment; he continued to talk to my grandparents and her friends.
“Thank you, everyone!”
“Thank you!”
“I'm pleased to meet you all!”
“Please enjoy yourselves and have a wonderful time together, okay?” He addressed everyone there again.
Indeed, as the celebrations continued, it appeared that my father once more approached my grandparents, while my mother positioned herself in front of him to engage with them again, despite their preoccupation. “Your daughter is a gorgeous black woman!”
“May I marry her?” He finally asked my grandparents. This took my mother by surprise; she even leaned in closer to where her friends—the women accompanying her—were seated, prompted by my father's remark—a word that appeared unusual. “Wow! Really!” My grandmother said.
“Go ahead Mr. Legrand!”
“She's all yours!” My grandfather replied with a smile, even though he had no clue who he was.
That was amusing, wasn't it?
“Father! What did you just say?”
“I just met this guy, and I don't even know him!”
“Really! Are you serious?” My mother responded to my grandfather's comment while her friends were laughing. As that hook was gaining attention, my father's crew, who were positioned where they were, had women accompanying them, and they observed everything my father did.
“Congrats, bro!”
“It feels like you got her!” One of the men accompanying my father remarked cheerfully.
And the rest burst into laughter while sharing beer. Then my father asked everyone to keep the celebration going. “Why don't we keep the celebration going, huh?”
“What do you all say?”
“Let's keep it going, everyone!” My father said loudly. “Legrand!”
“What other languages do they speak in Italy?” My grandfather asked him.
“At that time, people spoke Italian, English and Roman. Why?” He responded.
“You speak English very well!” My grandfather said and smiled.
“You speak English well too!”
“Thank you!” He responded again.
Meanwhile, the music and drums continued to play loudly, and everyone kept celebrating the Carnival. “Can we talk?” My father asked my mother as she crossed her arms and stood in front of him.
“Why?”
“Can you leave me alone now?”
“Can I return to my friends now?” She replied and asked. “Okay! Take your time!”
“But I look forward to seeing you again later!” He told her.
“What do you think?” He also asked. “Alright, fine.” She conceded.
Before my father returned to sit with the other men who had come with him, he kissed my mother's hand.
