Part 4

But while my father and my mother conversed for the first time, he seemed to notice that she was barefoot, as she had no shoes or sandals on her feet.

“May I ask you a question?”

“Why aren't you wearing any sandals or shoes?” He asked her while his facial reaction was pensive.

“And does that concern you?” She replied. At that moment, it appeared that my mother was nearly at her house, just a short distance away.

Despite her request for my father to cease following her, he declined and continued to trail her until she arrived home.

One can only imagine the frustration and peril my mother encountered that night, with my father feeling like a stranger to her. “Well, while I was dancing, my shoes got torn,” she explained. “Okay.” He responded and laughed.

“What’s funny?” She asked.

“Nothing.” He replied.

Then, for my father to demonstrate his carelessness and gallantry, he informed my mother that he was offering her the Italian boots he was currently wearing.

“I’m not sure if that will inconvenience you; I can also give you the boots I have on,” he told her.

“You can take both pairs so you can wear them,” he added. “No, thank you.”

“It’s okay.” She responded.

“But why not?”

“They are Italian boots!” He spoke. “Don’t you like Italian stuff?” He asked her while he was wondering. “I’m already in front of my house, alright?”

“I’m going to take another pair of shoes in my room,” she explained. “You don’t need to worry, okay?” She told him again. “Alright, fine!” He acknowledged and opened the door for her. “Goodnight Cowboy!”

“Now, leave me alone!”

“Bye!” She said as she walked into her house and shut the door quickly. No doubt my mother closed the door because she didn’t want my father to enter her home, as he was a stranger to her at that time. Once my mother shut the door, my father remained outside, contemplating her name and even attempting to spell it. “Her name is Janie, right?”

“It’s the first time I’ve heard that lovely name.”

“Damn, I almost had her!”

“She Jamaican and beautiful!”

“Tonight, won’t end without me getting along with her!” He remarked while lingering outside my mother’s house, waiting for her to come outside again.
