The I Chapter
The Night My Parents Met
Part 1
It was one night when my father, an Italian Explorer and Navigator,
met my mother in Kingston at a cultural event called Carnival, which Jamaica celebrates every year with colorful costumes, music, dancing, and including food.
Well, at that time, my father and his crew, or his adventure squad, came to Kingston and took part in the annual cultural event. At that moment, the beautiful music of reggae, dancehall, and other Jamaican musical genres was playing, and people were clapping and laughing together that night.
Maybe you're imagining how I knew all those details of my parents' lives before I was even born, of course. That is right!
I wasn't even born yet, and you can imagine that. But my parents explained their past to me. Don't worry, you'll know how and why later. Keep reading!
Indeed, it was a truly marvelous time, when everyone enjoyed each other, their families and friends, and even strangers who had come from other countries to be there.
So, hundreds of people dressed in carnival costumes paraded, and fireworks were fired into the air as well.
But where my mother, her family, and others were, there was a campfire, and the people were also drumming.
It was true that the whole Country was celebrating, though of course it didn't matter where a person was.
The sound of the music permeated the blood of all who were there; their hearts were so happy; it seemed as if it were the last day of their lives.
When my mother, a beautiful Jamaican-born woman, was with her family, she got my father's attention before they had ever met or communicated for the first time.
Yes, my father, who was sitting with his crew, joking and drinking beer and eating fried chicken, saw a beautiful Jamaican woman dancing with others, and they all watched her as she danced with the group. My mother, who danced, was really focused on it because she loved the field so much, but she didn't know if she was going to meet the man who was going to be her husband.
“What a stunning young woman!”
“Have you all noticed her?” my father remarked to the other men accompanying him.
“Who?”
“You're referring to the dance group, right?” some of the other men responded.
“Yes!” My father exclaimed.
“They are all gorgeous.” Another man chimed in. “But this one has captured my attention.”
“Can I just go and speak to her already?” My father asked his crew. “Hold on! Can't you see they're occupied?” the same man replied to my father.
“I simply can't wait,” my father insisted. To be honest with you, my father was so entranced that he was focused solely on my mother.
And when my mother and father's eyes caught each other for the first time, it was like their souls had flown into a Paradise surrounded by the most beautiful flowers I had ever seen. My mother's beautiful eyes and smile made my father lose and almost tumble off the table where he sat with his crew at the time.
Part 2
Later that night, after my mother had finished her dance, she took a stroll to retrieve something from her house. Well, her house was close to where everyone and my father were sitting and assisted.
Naturally, my mother was a dancer, and she excelled at it. So, before anyone could outshine her, they would need to rise early; it's not easy to claim that either.
“Bravo, darling! Bravo, darling!”
“You performed wonderfully!” Both of my grandparents praised my mother after she danced and brought joy to the audience. “Congratulations ladies!”
“That was enjoyable!” Several other audience members also expressed their congratulations to the group of women who were dancing, including my mother.
Indeed, my mother and her dance group performed exceptionally well, captivating the audience; some attendees felt compelled to congratulate them by showering them with roses and flowers. “Bravo! Bravo!” exclaimed another man, who was so inebriated that he had been drinking.
“Oh! Thank you!”
“We appreciate the affection, everyone!”
“Thank you very much!” my mother and the other women in the dance group responded to the audience.
Subsequently, my mother expressed her appreciation to my grandparents, saying, “Father! Mother! Thank you!”
“Oh, my baby! You're welcome!” My grandparents replied to my mother with so much happiness.
In fact, at that moment, it wasn't just my grandparents applauding and congratulating my mother; everyone there was doing the same for her and the other dancers as well.
“Thank you, father! Thank you, mother!”
“Thank you, everyone!” my mother said once more, beaming at the other women.
Right after my mother and the ladies had finished dancing, they took a brief pause to sit down. And it was after the break that my mother decided to change her shoes, which had gotten torn while she was dancing. But before she went home to change her shoes, she sat and engaged in conversation with her friends about my father, who was watching her from where he was seated with his crew. “Wow! We did it!” one of the other dancers told to my mother and the other members.
“Thank you, everyone!” the other dancers also echoed in response to the congratulatory remarks.
“You're welcome, ladies!” came the reply from someone seated nearby. Then, my father, who also sat nearby, let out a loud breath and uttered a phrase that once again caught my mother's attention. “Hey you!”
“Yes! You!”
“The lady in the pink dress,” my father called out loudly, “You were my favorite among all the dancers.”
Oh! No!
Did my father say that?
Of course, he did.
But did many people hear him, including my mother and the other dancers?
Yes! They did!
“What? Not this guy again!” My mother remarked as she sat with the other dancers near her parents.
Undoubtedly! It seemed my mother recognized who had spoken; her gaze fell upon him.
“What happened?” The other dancers asked my mother who was looking at my father.
“Did we hear that man?” My mother replied, asked the women with her.
“Yes! We did!” the other women confirmed. “But did he say something inappropriate?”
“Did he not congratulate you and give you a compliment?” The women asked my mother again.
“Ah! Men!”
“You know they are troublemakers, right?”
“All women who trust them often regret it later!” My mother replied and stated.
“This guy was looking at me.” My mother added while seating. “Who’s looking at you?” The other women replied and asked her. “You see that man over there?”
“He seems to be attempting to flirt with me, right?”
“Why did he not stop it?” She responded. Of course! My mother's reaction was so amusing to the other women that they couldn't help but laugh.
Exactly? My mother's response elicited laughter from all the women. “Did you guys know men are like roosters while women are also like chickens?”
“The chickens know roosters like to rooster, that's why they keep running away.”
“And when chicks are born, the rooster hardly notices the chicks.” My mother shared this with the women, chuckling lightly. “Even with all their imperfections, not all men are alike!” one of the women responded.
“I understand, but that guy appears to be a Cowboy!”
“What is he searching for?”
“I am not a Cowboy—none of us ladies are!” My mother said. “You are aware that individuals travel from various parts of the globe to attend Carnival, right? He may not be Jamaican!” Another woman responded.
“Alright! Too bad for him!” My mother said.
Part 3
A couple of minutes later, my mother went to retrieve something from her nearby house.
“I'll be back in a few minutes, alright?”
“I'll change my torn shoes,” my mother informed the women. “Okay! We'll wait for you!” Her friends responded. She indeed moved and headed to her house to put on a different pair of shoes since the ones she was wearing were torn from dancing. While this may seem a bit odd, it's important to understand something. Did you know that my father, who noticed my mother leaving, got up and followed her?
“Guys, look!”
“Did you all see that?”
“Where do you think she's headed?” My father asked the other men with him as he observed my mother moving away. “I have no idea where she's going, but it's not our concern!” One of his crew replied, while the others chuckled at him. “This is it!”
“This is it, guys!”
“This is my opportunity to speak to her for the first time!”
“What do you think?” My father said again as he stood up to follow my mother down the road.
“Help yourself out Captain but be careful!” One of his crew replied.
Without hesitation, my father got up and trailed my mother down the road, eager to have a conversation with her for the first time. Indeed, as my mother was walking, she heard footsteps and the rustling of leaves behind her.
So, this made her suspicious that someone was following her, causing her to feel a bit anxious and quicken her pace. Just ahead, near her house, she finally turned around and saw the person tailing to her; it was my father.
“Who are you?”
“Where did you come from?”
“What do you want?” My mother asked my father who was following her.
“Hi, beautiful!” My father responded as he approached her. “What? Who are you?”
“Why was you looking at me?”
“And why are you following me?” She pressed. “My name is Legrand Wendavik!”
“Just call me Legrand Wendavik, okay?” My father replied to her. He also said, “I noticed you were watching me while you were dancing.”
“It wasn't me watching you; it was you watching me!” She countered it. “Right!” He agreed.
“But I saw you!”
“I asked you a question, but you never answered.”
“Why are you following me?” She reiterated. “Honestly, I think I liked the way you danced.” He replied and smiled. “Do you mind telling me who taught you to dance?”
“Can you teach me how to dance?” He asked, then smiled while pretending to dance right in front of her. “Alright, Cowboy! Stop it!”
“Stop dancing! That’s it!” She replied. “I don’t think you know what you are doing.”
“Listen! If you don't stop following me, I'll call security, alright?” She also told him.
“Cowboy?”
“Hey! Who's a Cowboy?”
“I am not a Cowboy! Watch your mouth young lady!” He replied. In the meantime, my mother was mocking my father and laughing at him to such an extent that she noticed he felt somewhat embarrassed by her reaction.
And as amusing as it might appear, my father truly was embarrassed. “Are you mocking me?”
“You are mocking me, right?”
“Does my dancing amuse you?” He inquired as she chuckled at him. Honestly, there were two reasons for my mother's laughter; the first was that my father lacked dancing skills, and the second was that he made a sheepish expression when she referred to him as a Cowboy. “Pay attention to me, Cowboy!”
“Listen up!”
“Of all the women here, you chose to follow me, right?” She responded. “Why?” She questioned him.
“Well, I'm from Italy! And my crew and I are visiting Jamaica for the Carnival!” He explained.
“Welcome to Jamaica but go away!”
“Leave me alone!” She replied and kept walking. “But what might your name be?”
“What is your name? He asked her and kept following her again. “If I tell you my name, will you leave me alone?” She replied. “Done deal!” He spoke.
“My name is Janie!”
“Call me Janie!” She responded and told him about her name for the first time.
“What a beautiful name!” He told her.
“Thank you!” She replied.
“Are you happy now?” She asked right after she told him her first name. “What a lovely name you have!”
“I'm pleased to meet you Ms. Janie!” He responded. “Thank you! And goodbye!” She told him. “Where are you from? And why are you in Jamaica?” He asked her. “Excuse me!”
“I am Jamaican!” She replied and shook her head.
