Chapter 16A: Practical Tips for Aligner Compliance in Teenagers
Since aligner treatment depends heavily on consistent daily wear, a few practical strategies can meaningfully improve compliance in teenagers specifically.
• Use a simple visible tracking system (a wall calendar, phone reminder app, or a wear-time app some aligner brands provide) rather than relying purely on memory.
• Establish a consistent "aligner-out" routine only for meals and brushing, rather than removing them casually throughout the day for convenience, which is one of the most common reasons for under-wearing.
• Keep a spare aligner case in a backpack or school bag at all times, since a lost aligner (left wrapped in a napkin at lunch, for instance) is one of the most common real-world compliance disruptions.
• Revisit wear-time expectations directly and honestly with your teenager if progress checks show teeth aren't tracking as planned, rather than assuming the treatment itself isn't working.
