Chapter 6A: A Closer Look — Habit Appliances
When positive reinforcement alone hasn't resolved a persistent thumb-sucking, pacifier, or tongue-thrust habit by around age five or six, a simple removable or fixed habit appliance is sometimes recommended as a next step, rather than as a first resort.
How Habit Appliances Work
Most habit appliances work by gently interrupting the physical sensation or mechanics that make the habit satisfying — for example, a small acrylic or wire component positioned to prevent the thumb from creating suction against the roof of the mouth, or to remind the tongue not to push against the front teeth during swallowing.
What to Expect
A habit appliance works best as part of a broader, supportive approach — not as a stand-alone fix layered on top of an unaddressed underlying habit.
