Chapter 22A: Building Confidence During Visible Treatment
For many teenagers, the months of visibly wearing braces or an appliance coincide with a period of heightened self-consciousness about appearance in general, independent of orthodontics. A few practical approaches can help.
• Normalize the experience by pointing out, honestly, how common orthodontic treatment is among their peers — most teenagers know several classmates going through the same thing at any given time.
• Focus conversations on the process being temporary and purposeful, rather than dwelling only on the end result, which can feel very far away to a teenager partway through treatment.
• Avoid comparing your teenager's timeline or appliance choice to a sibling's or friend's experience, since individual cases genuinely differ in complexity and duration.
• Celebrate small, concrete milestones along the way — an expander coming out, a color change on braces, a new stage of aligners — rather than only the final "braces off" moment.
