Chapter 19A: A Simple Decision Flow for Parents
If you'd like an even simpler way to think through where your child likely stands, work through these questions roughly in order:
• Has your child had a first orthodontic evaluation by around age seven? If not, that's the first and most important next step, regardless of anything else.
• If they've been evaluated and no active issue was found, is a monitoring visit scheduled every six to twelve months? If yes, you're on the right track — no further action needed right now.
• If an issue was identified, did the orthodontist explain specifically what it is, why it's being flagged now, and what happens if you wait? If not, ask for this explanation before proceeding.
• If interceptive treatment was recommended and completed, has a plan for continued monitoring through the remaining growth years been set? If not, ask what the follow-up schedule looks like.
• If your child is eleven or older with most permanent teeth in place, has a comprehensive evaluation happened yet? If not, this is generally the next natural step regardless of earlier treatment history.
This flow won't replace a professional evaluation, but it's a useful way to make sure nothing has quietly fallen through the cracks between appointments.
