Chapter 23D: Financing and Insurance — A Closer Look
Orthodontic treatment is a significant financial commitment for most families, and understanding the common financing structures ahead of time makes the conversation with your provider considerably easier.
Common Payment Structures
• Full upfront payment, sometimes with a discount compared to installment plans.
• In-house monthly payment plans spread across the length of treatment, offered directly by many orthodontic practices.
• Third-party financing or EMI (equated monthly installment) arrangements through a bank or financing partner.
• Dental insurance coverage, where available, which may cover a portion of orthodontic costs, particularly for children, subject to plan-specific limits and waiting periods.
Questions Worth Asking Before Signing Any Agreement
• Is the total cost fixed regardless of how many visits or adjustments are needed, or could it increase if treatment runs longer than expected?
• What specifically happens to any remaining balance or in-progress appliance if we need to switch providers partway through treatment?
• Are retainers, emergency repair visits, and the retention-phase follow-ups included in the quoted price, or billed separately?
• Is there a refund policy if treatment is discontinued early, and under what circumstances does it apply?
A reputable practice will have clear, written answers to all of these questions readily available, not vague verbal reassurances.
