Chapter 23E: Coordinating With Your Child's School
For most children, orthodontic treatment has minimal impact on school life, but a little proactive coordination can smooth out a few predictable friction points.
• Share basic information with your child's teacher if wearing a removable appliance during school hours is part of the treatment plan, so it isn't mistaken for a distraction or confiscated by mistake.
• If your child plays a wind instrument or sings competitively, mention this to your orthodontist in advance — some appliance choices and timing can be adjusted around important school performances or exams.
• For contact sports through the school, ensure your child has an orthodontically appropriate mouthguard well before the season starts, rather than scrambling once practice has already begun.
• If teasing or self-consciousness becomes a genuine concern at school, as discussed in Chapter 22, involve the school's counselor or your child's teacher proactively rather than waiting for it to escalate.
