To the neighbors
It is time for the mothers to visit the neighboring town. What is normal to the residents, may be abnormal to outsiders.
The mothers have taken the coach to town. They are specifically going to pick up supplies. The trip is also to get a gift for the new couple. A house warming so to speak. All knew that was the surface pretense. The hidden agenda is to let Joyce window shop.
This gives her the ability to see what is out there in the way of second and other wives. She has seen how it works. Seen how Mary will be sixth wife to Samuel. She needs to have at least one more sister. Soon she will be asking Samuel to make her a house.
The need may be urgent considering Chris is already married and that Marsha may already have others in mind. Her oldest son, Peter, even if he gets a kick in the ass to make his move, should also be married to Rose.
She would be the odd duck out having no sister.
The currency here is trade. Atasha is carrying the trade bag and smiling. She says that they will be able to get all that they want and then some with what she had. Mary and Joyce feel that they know.
When they enter the town, they see why.
Samuel and his wives are normal, so to speak. For whatever reason, the vast majority of the population is female. If they had to say, it looked like it was five or six to one. The families that had sons could be considered the upper crust of this world.
The news of the arrivals has not spread, yet. As soon as the unknown women get out of the coach, the town’s women come over to greet the new women. They just feel that the two must be visitors from one of Samuel’s wives relative.
As soon as they gather, all noses are going. These two are not changelings. They are full human. Samuel has gone and brought back new blood. He has done that in the past. Those men have run off to other countries. These are older women.
They smell male in the mix. There are fins rising in the water.
“Ladies, calm down.” Atasha yells. ”Yes these are human mothers from that world that our husband would go to. That world, by now, has been destroyed. These are the mothers of three young men that came here to escape. Before anyone gets wet, the three are going to have one or more of my daughters as wives. One has already been mated.
Today we are here to trade. We need some items and these two have introduced us to one of their fine inventions from their world.”
She opens a list and puts it on the door of the coach. Then creates a table. This is new to Mary and Joyce, so they just act like they have seen it all. Now the trade items are laid out. The two try to hide their old world embarrassment when bearkin Judith casually demonstrates the basic operation of the device.
The attention now has shifted from the two newbies to the slender vibrating toy.
Atasha now tells them that they are looking for the items on the list. The town’s women now race away and soon they are back. Trades are being made. One for one. They had everything on the list.
Mary nudges Joyce and points out a very cute female who appears to be in her early thirties. She is very disappointed that she did not have anything to trade. Joyce walks over to her. She starts to talk to the woman.
“Hi, my name is Joyce. What’s yours?”
“I’m Bridget.”
“Who is your husband?”
“I never have been that lucky. I don’t have one.”
The other wives are looking and smile. They know that that one has always been single. She just has not been lucky enough to be picked. She is the one that always shows up only to hear that you should have been here yesterday.
Today, she is on time and in the right place.
Joyce brings her over and they all go into the coach.
“I am wife to my husband George.” Joyce says. “I am the only wife. In my old world, that was the norm. Now I have a son who is already married to one of Samuel’s daughters and my other son should be soon. Mary here may soon be Samuel’s sixth wife. I’m alone. I have no sister. You seem like a good fit. Would you consider being a wife to my husband George?”
Bridget is stunned to silence so Tasha tells her, “While you are thinking about it, why don’t I walk with you to your house and help you get a few changes of clothes. That way you can come with us and stay a while.”
Tasha and Joyce walk with her. The three come back but now the other women are wondering what the unlucky is doing with a bag. They see her get into the coach and it drives away. In the coach, Bridget is given a toy.
They arrive back. Everyone comes out to help unload. All see a new face but they see Joyce hanging on to her as support. All start to give George a look that says, “You are in for a good talk.” George knows because he and Joyce have extensively talked about this exact subject.
All he told Joyce is that if it is her wish, he would go along with it but as long as it was her choice. What a noble man he is. Ya right. He is a man and it is only that they are in the whole group that he still has his pants on.
Actually, it did take quite a few days of the three being alone to talk for them to become comfortable with each other. They gathered their sons and Marsha together to announce that Bridget is agreeable to become George’s second wife.
This will not be the last outsider wedded in. It is apparent that the indigenous women are not the problem. These outsiders go on to produce many male children.
