Charrel (nymph)

As I was waiting for my bus, I saw her just staring at me intensely. She is more than a dream. Platinum blond hair that is wild but in an intentional way. A face to die for and a taste for red. Even her contacts are red. She does not have that air of being a lady of the night but has the air of one that exists in the dark. She has someone special she is looking for.

In a blink of an eye, she vanishes before my eyes. I do not mean that she left in the sense of walking off quickly. She vanished as if it was magic. I am left in a state of actual panic. I brave the oncoming traffic and go to that spot. I can smell her lingering scent. It is flowery with a hint of something else that I cannot place my finger on. All I know is that she is not a delusion.

At other times, in various locations, I catch sight of her. Always looking at me with an expression of being lost, lonely but a slight anticipation. Almost like she knows the time we are to meet. She looks like she wants to contact me but is not allowed.

She is like a person that knows what she wants but has to wait because she knows that it will go on sale. Like a person going on the vacation of a lifetime but it is still a month away. Like days before a wedding. Like the night before Christmas for a child.

Her look is such that if we were to even talk, it would cause time itself to stop.

Every time I even show a hint of wanting to even cross the street, she vanishes again.

One morning I woke and all I could smell is that flowery scent. My mind did not believe what my eyes see. There she was lying there on my bed watching me sleep with the biggest smile. She took a deep breath.

“My name is Charrel, I have waited all this time for you, my master. You sent me back here to this time so that we could meet earlier. You see, you saved me in the future but you were very old. You protected me and comforted me. I fell in love with you because you cared when others wanted to destroy me. You were dying and with the last of your immense power you sent me back to this time when your powers awaken. I am here to guide you. I love you.”

This is too much for my brain to handle, then she did something that I have never had in my life, she kisses me. I never felt this in my life. There was actually a physical shock. It was like a light turning on in that tight dark place I lived my whole life in.

When she broke from me, she had the biggest smile. “I have waited for that for so long. You have just awakened. Did you ever question why you could just create those programs. Why did your fingers just know what to type? Your power was working in the background. Now are you ready to experience your full potential? You never questioned the fact that when you read anything, you did not read, you saw that print as a real world with real characters.”

Now I do remember something. As she looks at me, I realize that she was the main character in one of my games. Other characters did not like her because she would not warp to their ideas and lusts. They tried to kill her but there was an old wizard, who everyone was both afraid of and respected, took her to heart and protected her.

She is smiling at me, “You just remembered a future memory. You projected it back in time and had you create that game that made you a great fortune. That actually happened to you. I was sent back to help you and correct the feelings of the population and protecting me.”

She tells me that, in the not so distant future, a rift between universes will happen. Magic is viewed as just slight of hand, tricks or distractions of the eye. My awakening has triggered the event. I am actually a reborn from that other universe.

“The rift was deliberate. You see our universe is dying. The magic is almost depleted where as your universe has never connected with it. We are going to be perceived as the invaders. Like your universe, the majority just want to live in peace. Like yours, we also have some bad people. Most have been locked away and were left in our universe but a few will escape and turn this world against all of us. You sent me back to make sure that you change that view.”

I knew what she was talking about. Since I first saw her, I have been writing a new game program based on that premise. The rift, the immigration from a dying world and the few evil amongst them. A wise wizard battles them with the help of a lovely assistant.

It is a prequel to my first hit game. The old wizard and his assistant.

She is smiling at me again then gets up and opens the door.

Panicking, “You aren’t going to disappear on me, are you?”

“No, dear master. I am never going to leave you ever again. This time, when you go to the final life, I am going with you. I am yours even after eternity ends.”

She leaves the door open in a gesture of being here, just through an open door. I feel her now as if we had a physical connection. An umbilical cord joining us, sharing all vital functions. I now know that this is right. I hear he giggle as I think that and hear her in my mind saying,

“That is the best description of what we have. We are one. Now get up. You don’t want your freshly cooked breakfast to get cold.”

I get up from the bed. While I was getting dressed, Charrel was making me a breakfast that I never had. That was a surprise because all I have here are leftovers from takeout orders in the fridge. I don’t cook. That takes time away from my computer.

She, with the biggest smile on her face, presents me with a breakfast fit for royalty. Eggs, sausage, toast and coffee. All just the way I like but never have. Take out does not even come close. Most is premade in factories and microwaved before arriving all mixed together and cold.

The smell was intoxicating. This was not takeout. We sat down and she tells me that when we first met in that future life, this was what you liked but only occasionally had. “To quote yourself, you can burn water.”

Only when some family that you helped insisted that you stay overnight would you get this in the morning. I first cooked this for you but did not dare to sit and eat with you. You insisted that you would not eat until I sat and ate with you. That first breakfast went cold while you waited. I tried to swap my hot plate for your cold one but you told me that I made that now cold plate for you. You ate that one only after you saw me take my first bite. You made pleasant satisfying sounds as you ate.”

I tell her that I have developed the ability to taste the difference between a hot plate and the same meal cold. “A hot pizza is good but the taste of a cold slice in the morning tastes totally different. Both have wonderful flavor. It is nice to hear that I still have that even when I am old.”

Now that we are done and we both cleaned the dishes, I want to start working on the game program but I do get an idea.

Magic manifests

“Charrel, I want to go on a walk in the park with you. I need to not let that computer chair grab hold of my butt. If it does, I’ll not get up for a long time. I want to just walk and have you describe what life is like in the future. What I need is for you to point out what is physically different from what we have today. Oh heck, I just want to walk and show you off. That other stuff was just me not having the courage to say that I already am in love with you.”

She is smiling again. I love that smile and want to keep her smiling but from what she said, she has not had those instances of smiling before that old wizard defended her. Now I am going to change that.

We walk and sheepishly I reach and take hold of her hand. The connection is hard to describe. It’s magic, literally. I find that she is channeling game instructions to my abilities as we just walk.

I am not even average build. I am what you would call a skinny build. All lean muscle. When we walked, there was a muscle brain that stepped in front of us.

“That woman is too good for you. She is mine. I’ll show her a good time.”

“Don’t you even think that about my wife!”

Without even thinking, I opened my fingers wide, drew my arm back and released that hand. Upon contact with that man, I felt a force that I have never felt before. That impact had no effect on me. It was like I fluffed up a pillow but the man went flying back a goodly distance upon the impact to his chest. I stood there with my mouth open.

Some people checked on the now unconscious man. They called the police. The police responded with a medical squad. He had broken ribs and a possible punctured lung. The witnesses all told them that I was defending us from an attempt at kidnapping my wife.

After the police were convinced that it was indeed self defense, they let us go.

Charrel is literally bouncing and singing. She has a mesmerizing voice. People around us stop in mid stride and just listen.

We get to the park and I thought that I was going to ask her about that sudden strength but she is so happy. I just ask her what is making her happy. She puts me into a hug and we kiss for a long time. Long enough for someone to tell us to get a room.

She breaks and says something that awakens me.

“You called me your wife.”

“That’s right, you are my wife. Why else would I send you back to me? I don’t know if you ever felt it but I know, without any contact, that that old wizard loved you so much that he sent you back to this young me just to be able to make you my mate for real. Yes you are my wife.”

This time I kiss her and she is stunned. “That is the first time you kissed me.” That smile she has.

Now some old couple walks by and the woman comments that she wished they were that young again. We stop and Charrel nods to me. I ask them what would you do if you were young again.

We were told that they never had children because of sterility. The woman said that they would have loved to have children.

“What would you say if I told you that I am a great magician and could correct that sterility and make you our age. I could correct all those who have had contact with you to now see you only as a young couple they have known. Not the old folks.

“Would you accept being young again?” Charrel asked.

The woman spoke for the both of them. “I know that this is really just a hypothetical situation but if what you say was possible, we could not afford the cost. We are on a limited income. I would love to have children.”

Her husband tells us that they would love to have another lifetime with each other.

Charrel and I take their hands and tell them to join hands . Now we are a complete circle of joined hands. I speak an incantation. Those two are suddenly looking and feeling like they were when they first were married.

They look at each other and are both crying with delight. I tell them that there is no problem with having children. All your neighbors now know you as the young couple that inherited that house and car from your grandparents.

Both are told to go off and have a happy and fruitful life. I tell them that some events are going to happen.

“You are the first in this worlds history to experience true magic. This world will experience a surge of magic. Like most of this world, there will be a few bad apples. I have given you both the ability to discern and defend your family from the evil one. There will come a time when you will help defend your neighbors. When needed, you both will have the power to shield your neighborhood. Remember this day. Remember magic is real now.”

They tell us that they will remember. They almost run towards their home.

Charrel just smiles and comments that they, more than likely will have a child before too long. She has a sadness to that statement. I know what that is about.

“How about, after the turmoil is over and the evil few are defeated, I cast an incantation that will allow people from this world to mate with people from the rift. To marry and have children. Would you like that?”

I now get another long hug from her as she whispers to me, “I really would love having your children.”

Now sitting on a park bench that overlooks a very large pond. The trees reflect in the water. There is a walking track around it with some people walking. Mostly single old people. Charrel told me that those singles really would not like to be returned to youth. Most, if not all, are waiting for the moment they can cross over to their mates in the final life.

She asks me how did I know how to return that couple to a young age.

“I must apologize to you my love. As I was sending you back to me, I wrote a program of sorts. When I took your hand today, while we walked, that program ran and gave me all the knowledge I had accumulated and how to use it. That me wanted this me to grow more in wisdom so I could properly protect you and yes, that me never married or had children. I was too old to start, now I am not.”

Charrel just leans on my shoulder.

“It was my old self’s idea to start showing people that real magic exists. By helping them with magic, I also instill the select with some magic abilities. Mostly defensive but also offensive magic. I guess that the future me is smart. This way people will start to see that magic is real. By the time the rift opens, we should have an army of defenders, people who can screen and fighters.”

She tells me that now I will be smarter. “You will add to your greatness and wisdom.”
