Chapter Four

Dania was at her house when a woman called her. She was in her living room sitting in one of the sofas. She was drinking some home-made sorrel wine.

“My name is Pat Lee. I’m one of Scott’s baby mothers.”

“How did you get my number? He has other women. Why are you calling me in particular?”

“Because he lives with you and has to give you money. You’re shortening my child’s maintenance money I’m getting from him. I also heard that you were pregnant.”

“Listen Pat, or whatever your name is, I’m not pregnant. And even if I was what business is it of yours?”

“I’m making it my business. You’re just tricking him. You have a boyfriend by the name of Demar. I’m sure you wouldn’t like Scott to hear about you and him.”

“He was my batchmate in college. Now he’s up here teaching, you can’t prove that I was ever intimate with him.”

“You are one of those girls who used to live at the Links hotel.”

“I’ve never sold my body yet. Not me, I have too much pride to do that, plus I’m afraid of catching any incurable diseases. Pat, you’re just one more of his women. He has about four other baby mothers. I don’t see what’s so special about you. Go about your business and leave me alone,” she told her and ended the call.

Dania was just off the phone to Pat when another woman called her.

“Are you Dania Green?

“Yes, I’m that person. How may I help you?

“My name is Janet Lobban. I understand that you live with Scott. Well, I have two children for him. They can’t get any money from him because of you.”

“As a matter of fact, I’ve just come off the phone to another of his baby mothers. So where in the line do you think you fall?”

“I don’t know about any other woman having children for him. All I know is about the two I have for him. I want you to leave him so that his children can get the proper maintenance from him.”

“He lives with me. I’m sure you don’t expect me to volunteer to do his domestic chores or take money out of my pay to feed him?”

“I don’t care about you and his domestic arrangements. All I’m saying is that from you came into his life things have been going downhill for my children. I want him to leave you.”

“Janet, or whatever your name is, you can’t tell me what to do with my life. I will find out from him about you,” she said and ended the call.

Dania called Scott about Janet and Pat later on that day. He was in Linstead sitting inside his bus and talking to the driver when she called. He went outside to answer her.

“Two of your women, Pat and Janet, just called me. I didn’t know that Janet has two children for you. They complain that because of me, you’re shortening their money.”

“Yes, I have two children with her. You shouldn’t listen to them. The money I give them is more than enough. They just want to make trouble.”

“Did you sleep with Juliet, last night?’

“No, I went straight home and went to bed. Everywhere I go, I hear that you and Fitz are lovers.”

She burst out laughing and drank some more of her sorrel drink.

“That’s a lie. I don’t even like him. It must be your malicious girlfriend, Juliet, trying to mix me up with him. Your baby mother drama is getting to me now. I didn’t bargain for this. It is really upsetting me now. I don’t know how much longer I can continue.”

“Don’t take any more calls from either of them or from any other woman saying that they are one of my baby mothers.”

“I’ll do that, but don’t listen to anything about Fitz. He’s just a poor dirt farmer,” she told him and ended the call.

Fitz was at his house when Dania called him. He was actually on his veranda drinking some rum and boom.

“Fitz, I thought I told you that I have no interest in you. Why have you been spreading rumors about me and you when you know there is no truth to it? I have never slept with you, yet.”

“I have never told anybody that I slept or was sleeping with you.”

“I told you to stick to your woman and leave me alone. You can’t afford me. You don’t see how broad my hips are and how full my breasts are. You think you can feed me.”

“I want you to leave Scott and come to me.”

“You’re just a poor dirt farmer. By the way who are you sleeping with, Denise or Tula?”

“Tula, but it’s you I want. You’re a sex goddess. I’ve heard about you and Demar, but neither he

nor Scott can give it to you like I can.”

“That might be an empty boast. I’m fully satisfied after doing it with the two men I have coming

to me. So, you want to try me out, but as I told you before, I’m satisfied with what I’m getting.”

“You’re saying that I’m no good, but how are you coping with Scott and all his baby mother

drama.”

“I’m coping, I never really expected it. Don’t you have any baby mothers?”

“I have only one baby mother.”

“I don’t believe you. Your name has been linked to so many women.”

“A lot of these stories are just rumors. I won’t tell you who is spreading them. Can we go

out? I know several clubs in town where we could go. He doesn’t have to know.”

“I wouldn’t go anywhere with you. You have a bad reputation with women.”

“So, you’ve bought into the rumor mill too.”

“You used to frequent the Jackson, Keswick and Portmore back roads with women.”

“I used to frequent the Keswick and Jackson backroads, but I’ve never been on the Portmore

back road.”

“Fitz, you’re lucky, I have two men I can go out with. What am I doing with a third man?”

“My offer is still open.”

“I’ll bear that in mind,” she said and ended the call.
