Chapter Two

The next night, there was a party in Keswick. Fitz Bruce was driving his car with Denise inside. She had asked him to take her there as her boyfriend, Jack Little, had some urgent business doing in Kingston.

“I wish I was your date, Denise. You’re looking so beautiful.”

“What happened to your girlfriend, Kelly?”

“You must be the only person who don’t know that we broke up a couple weeks ago. I thought you were still with Carl?”

“No, he left me for a teacher by the name of Janice. He quarrels with me every time he sees me with Jack. He says that my baby is just one year old, and I shouldn’t be looking a man already.”

“He’s jealous, maybe if you go back to him, he’ll leave Janice.”

She laughed.

“You’re always full of jokes, Fitz. Tula will be there, and she is in the same position you’re in. I’ll tell her to come and see you.”

They reached the party and he parked his car and he and she entered the venue. He couldn’t help noticing Scott and Dania who were dancing together. He and Denise started dancing together.

Carl and Janice entered the party and started dancing. He saw Denise dancing with Fitz and went over to her despite Janice hanging on to his shirt sleeves, trying to stop him.

“So, you’re sleeping with Fitz, now. You can let him mind Carrie. Look how young she is and you are out here with man. You should be home looking after her.”

“Leave me alone, Carl. So, what are you doing out here if it’s not the same thing?”

He went over to where he had left Janice. She was not there, instead he found her in a corner, sitting on a stool. She was drinking a malt beverage.

“What’s the matter with you? Everywhere we go and see her, you have to create a scene. I think you’re still carrying feelings for her. If you want to go back to her, why don’t you do so and leave me alone?”

“I’m just trying to make her behave more responsible towards Carrie.”

He went and bought food and drinks and they sat and had it. After a while, she resumed dancing with him again. Scott left Dania and went to dance with Juliet Parkes. When they were finished dancing, Dania went over to Juliet.

“Hey girl, Juliet, I want you to leave Scott alone.”

“You can’t stop me from dancing or sleeping with him. You’re a just come lately. You’re behaving as if you own him. Look how many baby mothers he has. If I were you, I would just take it easy.”

“All of you are just after him for his money.”

“Isn’t that why you’re along with him? I’m not after him for his money as I have my education.”

“I too have my education, girl.”

After the party, Dania went home with Scott, but they did not make love.

“Are you sleeping with me and Juliet at the same time?”

“She was just saying those things to annoy you. I know her boyfriend. She probably will have to explain to him why she said those things?”

“You could have denied that you were sleeping with her and let her shut up.”

“Yeah, I suppose so, but what good would it have done?”

Soon both of them began making preparations to go to bed.

Carl and Janice were still quarreling over Denise. They were at his house.

“Are you still interested in Denise?”

“Of course not, why would I be going around with you? I just want the best for Carrie.”

“Stop quarrelling with her every time you meet, especially if it’s a party.”

“I feel a way as if she has left her alone in the house.”

“They must have somebody there to look after her, either her mother or sister,” she said as they got ready for bed.

Fitz and Denise were still at the party. She had dragged Tula away from a man with whom she was dancing and brought her over to him. Like Denise, she was a tall copper colored girl. He

estimated her height to be about five feet seven inches. Denise would be an inch or so shorter. Denise would be about twenty-three years old. Tula would be about two years older than her, he thought. He bought food and drinks for himself and the two girls and the sat and had it.

“Isn’t Jack coming to the party?” he asked Denise.

They were dancing together while Tula looked on.

“I’ve been trying to get him, but all my calls are going to his voice mail.”

After the song finished playing, they went to sit beside Tula.

“What is Carl’s problem with you, Denise?” he asked.

“I think he wants her back. He can’t bear to see her out with another man. He was ready to take you on Fitz, even though he knows that she is seeing Jack.”

“You’re my new girlfriend, now, Tula,” he told her as they went to dance together.

A bevy of guys came over to Denise, but she refused to dance with any of them. Looking on, Fitz realized the reason she had turned them down. Jack was a very disagreeable and loud, mouth fellow. He was worse than either Scott or Carl. He didn’t understand what a nice girl like her saw in a guy like that. They left the party at around three o’clock that morning and he dropped both girls home.

Demar and Naomi were parked on the Keswick back road. They were drinking light beers and enjoying the cool night air.

“Scott is along with Juliet and several more women. He has about four baby mothers. I don’t know how Dania put up with him. It must be his money, why so many women are after him.”

“How many boyfriends do you have?”

“You’re the only one I know about. I’ve asked you about the female teachers up here before, you don’t like any of them?”

“You’re the only one I like.”

“There is a strong rumor that you and Dania have something going on.”

“Those are just rumors, you don’t see that she has her man, Scott.”

“What happen if anybody saw us on the backroad at this time of the night?”

Several cars were parked on the road, but far from each other.

“Nobody is going to see us, and everybody is minding their own business.”

They went into the backseat of the car to make love. That morning she slept late at his house. Eventually she got up to make breakfast for both of them before leaving for her own house.

Later in the day she was back at his house for an afternoon siesta up in his bedroom. When she was leaving, she saw him hastily trying to hide an object looking like a photograph. She snatched it away from him. It was a naked picture of Dania! Outside it had started drizzling.

“You must be sleeping with her. You can’t deny it.”

“It was from college days. I was along with her when we first met, but then we drifted apart.”

“You’re a liar, you’re still along with her. In the time that she has been teaching up here the amount of men I hear boasting of having sampled her. They are laughing at Scott. All that fool, Fitz wouldn’t mind if she left Scott and came to him. But he doesn’t know the fire he’s playing with. I won’t sleep with you again until I know the truth.”

She threw down the picture in a huff and left. Half an hour later she called him.

“I want both of us to go up to Dania’s hose to thrash out things with her.”

“I won’t be going anywhere with you. I’m not sleeping with her. If you want to believe it or not that’s your business.”

“You’re a dirty liar. I’m sorry I ever went to bed with you,” she said and ended the call.
