I am Fred
I’m Fred, Fred Sampson. In my past, as an important slime, which I still am, I only wanted the best to eat so I would eat at only the very delicious gardens. A man, I later found out that his name was Karl, planted the best flowers.
I would grace his garden with my presence but he would interrupt my meal by chasing me. It must be a game to him. He would try to hit me with a shovel. I would always dodge. I would tell him no, not to interrupt my meal. That was my usual dining experience. We have since come to terms.
That was because I adopted a human named David Sampson.
One day, while dining, he came up to me and started to make pleasant sounds to me. At first I saw him as a pet, like Karl, but he stopped Karl from his daily chasing routine. To tell the truth it was getting old anyways. When one owns a pet they must make sure it does not get into mischief that is why I started to follow him.
To make my pet feel more comfortable I started to take his shape. It was a slow process but I finally got the form right. I also gave up on trying to teach him my language so I learned his.
I’m glad he is house broken because he really got excited when I said a few words in his language.
At first, I had to carefully think of the proper words but after an immersion into his language I quickly spoke like a native. The other humans in his box where he lives in started to want to be my pets also, so I let them.
Once I was able to get them to understand me, they recognized my intellectual prowess, so they gathered their scholars so that I could impart my wisdom to them. Those people were so impressed with me that they arranged a meeting with their ruler.
When David and I went to their king, there was a crowd that made a lot of noise. It scared David so I hugged him and took him home. Later their ruler came to apologized to me. He was very sorry that the noise scared David so I graciously accept his apology.
In that meeting, I suggested that they set up more of the gardens that Karl could make around the capitol because some of my friends don’t like just what is growing around. They would prefer the top quality that I had. I also convinced him that they should not harm anymore of my kind. I have lost friends due to their attacks.
To show his sorrow, the ruler set up a luxurious dining garden on the palace grounds. He also said that no one would harm us again.
David had places to go during the day so I went along with him just to make sure that he did not get lost or get himself in trouble. The first time was to a place that David called a store. He took a long time looking at it. Well, I got hungry and told him so. He immediately got me something to eat. It was not as good as Karl’s but it was food. I made sure that he knew that Karl should be the one to plant the flowers.
Once I was sure that David could be on his own, I started to talk to other of his race. They needed my guidance. There were plenty of times that I had serious discussions about important matters. I even had my own advice page on what David calls the web.
In no time the others sought out my knowledge. They would seek out my advice, ask to talk to me and I appeared on their information shows.
I now get the respect that I deserve but still I sometimes feel very alone, even with all the staff around, when my pet David is not around. When he does come home in the evening, I take his hand and let him walk with me.
I do worry that he has not found a female to be with him. I too want a female but I will wait until he finds his mate. After I know that he is comfortable, I will find my mate but she will have to be comfortable with David. I won’t give up my pet.
A fateful meeting in the park
Some habits are hard to break. I had, for most of my working life, been working on low level jobs. Minimum wages. For lunch I always have a sandwich. Even now I have my sandwich for lunch. A wonderful improvement, these are not vending machine stale hard out of date sandwiches. Those are something I don’t miss. No these are made by my kitchen staff. The only crunch is the freshest lettuce.
The only times that I don't is business lunch meetings. On Tilxon, that means high class restaurant, not an in store lunch meeting where it is a sandwich platter. Today is at the store but not a meeting so I brought my lunch and went to a local park to eat.
Sitting on a park bench was my key out of that complaint department. I still like it. Call it a good luck charm part of the habit. Today is no different. The local park is a nice area. Well landscaped. A walk way around a small pond.
There are benches placed around the pond but facing in different directions. This way you can choose what to look at while sitting. I favor the bench that is closest to the edge of the park. I look at a small flower garden that was planted as a result of my best friend Fred.
When I am doing actual store work, Fred stays at the mansion. He gets bored quickly. At home he helps the staff even though he doesn't have to. It almost looks like he is supervising while helping. At times it’s almost like he is watching working pets.
Fred also now has a following, a fan club so to speak. He answers fan mail. Fred has done interviews. He has learned to control his impulsive nature and comes across as smart as he is.
I sit here thinking about him because I enjoy his company.
Sitting here, eating my sandwich reflecting on my best bud, lost in thought, I am brought back by the sound of a woman screaming for help. A little further down the border of the park I see that the woman is being dragged towards a pool.
A grabber plant had her. I ran over to her.
"Help me, please help me" she cries.
Knowing what I needed to do, I pull out my knife that I have hidden in my jacket, for self-defense. It made short work of freeing her. I cut the main vine that was dragging her and dragged her away from the reach of the grabber plant before I cut her free of the now severed coils.
As I cut, I see that her clothes are torn. I take off my jacket and drape it over her then continue cutting. Finally free from the coils, she is crying as she thanks me.
"I was just walking," she sobs "I was grabbed. If you hadn't been here, I would have"
She didn't finish what she wanted to say as she breaks down completely crying into my chest.
Looking down at her diminutive figure, her long blond hair that is now disheveled but still in a pony tail, I see that she is beautiful. From my unique vantage point, I could not help but notice that she had a not flat but also not overly abundant breasts.
Get that out of your mind, you just rescued her. You did not pick her up while she walked in the park. It's hard not to look she is that gorgeous.
The jacket barely covers her body. Not wanting her to have to walk home, I call for my limo. I tell the driver where I am and to bring a blanket. I let her know that I will have the driver bring her to her home.
"May I ask, what’s your name?" she asks me.
"I'm David Sampson" I answer.
She says that her name is Donna.
Donna pleads with me,
"I don't want to be alone. Would you please go with me and help me to my home?"
I have nothing important pending so I agree.
"Okay. I'll escort you to your home, my car is here now. Just tell the driver where to go."
This would be another park bench fateful encounter.
Her house was nothing impressive. A smaller size home. The door locks were the latest DNA imprinted, we sell those. She touched the pad and the door opened. Donna invites me in, so I follow her in.
The interior was modestly furnished, almost Spartan in its simplicity. Not frugal, to say the least. Each piece looks deliberately chosen for that spot and of excellent quality. It's the type of arrangement that you would not put your drink down without a coaster. If the living room had the red velvet rope on brass stands fence to keep people out of the display, I would not be surprised.
"Sit anywhere" Donna tells me "I need to take a quick shower. Please wait."
"I will" I say.
She goes off down the hall. In a few minutes I hear the shower running. After a while the sound of the water stops and then I hear the door open. There are footsteps coming down the hall. Barefoot footsteps.
I look up to see Donna shyly standing there with nothing but a towel on. Her hair still damp but now loosed from the pony tail. She was beautiful.
She comes over to where I am sitting.
"I'm so grateful that you saved me. I would be dead if it wasn't for your valiant rescue. I want to show you my appreciation"
She lets the towel drop to reveal her ever so slightly tanned alabaster skin. Those small breasts are now in full view. She is like one of those Greek goddess statues.
Discretion being the better part of valor, I stand up, grab the towel and wrap her in it. She looks shocked.
"You don't need to do this." I say, "I am attracted to you, who wouldn't be, but if I was to give in right now, well let's just say that we both would regret it."
"But I want you" she pleads.
I remember the warning that Jack gave me.
"How does this sound, Tomorrow, I don't have anything scheduled. How about we go out a for a daytime date. I really want to get to know you better. If after a few times together and we truly hit it off then I will take you up on the offer."
"Call me later to tell me if you want that date tomorrow."
Like you see in one of the old movies, I kiss her hand. I leave my number with her.
Without waiting for her answer, I leave and get into the limo.
Donna wanted to call him before his limo pulled away but she listened to what David said.
She knew that if she called it would do nothing but cheapen her feelings in his eyes. So as much as she wanted him, she held off until that evening.
David answered his phone on the second ring. It was Donna. She wanted to go out with me and apologized to me for, what she called, an impulsive action. We set up the meeting time. I am going to pick her up at her house. Then she will show me the sites. We would go for lunch maybe shopping or a movie.
I got her to agree that I would drop her off back at her house without going in.
.
As I get dressed up for a daytime date, casual. Fred looks at me
“Are we going on the garden tour now. I’ll get ready.”
“Sorry Fred. The woman I rescued yesterday wants to have lunch to thank me. Don’t worry, we will definitely go on that capital garden tour. Maybe I’ll ask Donna to come.”
Fred thinks about it then advises me,
“That would be best. You invite her home today. I need to see if she is real, just not after because you live with me. I don’t want a fanatic. Only fans.”
“Okay Fred, I’ll see if she is open to come here after we have lunch.”
“No, you have lunch with her. We have lunch all the time. You eat with her.”
He seems satisfied and goes out to check on his flowers. Fred has the ego thing down pat.
I have gotten myself a two seater convertible car. The limo driver got worried until I told him that sometimes I need alone time. A limo is good on a formal date but for a casual date, the sports car looks better. I tell him that he can go where ever he would like to go on these days.
I remind him that a person of my status cannot be seen driving to formal, business, and royal occasions. His job is secure, he now relaxed. This gives him courage to ask me something.
“A few months from now, my sister is getting married. She asked me if I would borrow the limo and drive her to her wedding.”
Before he could finish I told him that it would be my pleasure but he is to hire a driver.
“I want you to ride with your sister and her entourage. Your hire someone you trust to drive the limo. I will cover his price. You will have that paid day off. Enjoy.”
He is overjoyed. I tell him that he can go home for the day, I drive off to Donna’s place.
A side note. Even though the road is literally in the sky, why is there still traffic jams when I want to drive. Maybe I don’t notice it when I am being driven. The astonishing thing, for a peaceful society, there seems to be a lot of steering wheel banging and fist waving in these jams.
Arriving at Donna’s home, I hear the doorbell ring. Proximity sensors let you know if someone approaches your door. Even here, delivery people just drop your packages without ringing the doorbell.
After a few proper seconds, as to not let me know that she was waiting at the door for me, Donna opens the door.
“Oh, You’re here so soon. Come on in. I’ll get ready then we can go.”
“We are going to lunch at Kar Kars. I hear that it is getting rave reviews.”
“It is a wonderful place. I’m sure that you will like it.”
We arrive there quickly. That’s why I picked it. It is in her neighborhood. It sounds like she has been there before.
We were seated quickly at a corner table. Looking at the menu, I hear her say
“I recommend the open faced roast sandwich. It is very good”
I was correct, she has been here before. She must be a valued customer because, as soon as we were seated, there was a waiter right there. He just stood, not saying anything, waiting for us to say what we wanted.
“That sounds good.” I tell the waiter that I will have that. Donna tells him that she will have the same.
“We will have your order made right away.” And he leaves only to return with soft drinks.
Strange, Donna nods then takes a sip. She must eat here daily for them to know what she drinks without needing to ask. Maybe it is something that this restaurant does. Pair up the drink with the dish ordered. Fancy.
It is only a short while and the waiter returns with salads. Again, it must be that it is set by the main course. Blend the various tastes to the main course.
“This is a nice place.” I tell her. “The way that they match everything to the main course is unique.”
“I eat here frequently. I told you it was a good place.”
As we are eating the main course, I figure that it is time to ask her.
“I would like to show you my home today. I live with a sentient slime that is named Fred. He would like to meet you.”
This piques her interest.
“Don’t tell me, Is his name Fred Sampson? David Sampson, Fred Sampson. I should have made the connection before now. Yes I would like to see the manor and get to meet him. I follow him on his social page. He is a delight.”
The meal is done, excellent place. I think I will bring the next dignitary I have lunch with here.
Back in the car, I am again puzzled with the traffic. Trying not to be frustrated when Donna says casually
“It seems like you did not know this but there is a special lane above us.” As she pulls out a card from her purse. “This allows your car to use it.”
I look above and see that there is no cars there. She taps the card on dash and the car gains elevation to that lane. I got to get me a card like that but when I ask her where I get one, she just smiles and tells me that it is not available to the general public but she will try to get me one.
I’ll let it go at that.
With the clear lane, we arrive to my home. My staff greet us but it does seem too me that they are acting overly formal with my guest. That is good, I want to make a good impression.
That mood is shattered.
“So, you are the one that is trying to meet me. I won’t tolerate you playing with David’s emotions just to meet me.”
Fred crosses his arms and does his best to look intense. Then says
“Let’s take this inside so I can discuss my concerns. I need to protect David.”
He takes her hand and walks her inside. Fred is being Fred. Donna is smiling. A good sign that she realizes that he is just the same as he appears on all his web sites.
We sit out back, looking at the garden. Fred is looking her over. Donna, instead of being indignant, is amused. It is now well known that he, for the lack of a better term, is full of himself.
He sits down and in a not so whisper, he tells me,
“She seems like a plant eater. You have a good one here.”
I can see that she is a little puzzled but Fred says to her.
“It is my job to see that David is protected. When we first went over to the store, there was one woman that was going in for the kill. I warned him that she was not a plant eater but a meat eater. She was only after the status and power of being around David to be associated with me.”
I’m barely stopping me from laughing but he seems so serious. I won’t stop him. Besides Donna is eating this up.
What comes out of his mouth almost makes both of us choke.
“I think you are going to be good to David, so I am happy. Now I give you both my permission to go out to mate.”
Both sets of our eye balls nearly pop out of our heads.
I exclaim.
“Fred, don’t you mean go out to date?”
“No, a date is part of it. Once I know that you are mated, I can go out and find myself a mate.
David, you are fun to be with but primal urges not given into can lead to trouble.”
“Believe me Fred,” I tell him “I do have urges but “
“I’m not talking about you” He answers me.
Donna and I, almost at the same time let out “Oh!”
Very instantly he starts to usher us out.
“Now, both of you, since you want to, go out to date then mate.”
With that, we are both by the car and see Fred close the door.
I look at Donna, shrug, then say,
“I guess we have been thrown out for now. Where do you want to go?”
“How about we stop at my place.” Donna says coyly.
“Sounds good.” I call Fred and tell him to tell the staff I won’t be home tonight.
“All ready did that. Now go have fun.”
I like that guy.
It does hit me, why does he feel that he needs to protect me? Life’s mysteries but it works.
We drive off and enjoy. Quite a number of times.
