Gurtrude finds her one child

Gurtrude is now happy. She is now enjoying her new outlook on life. Both April and Stanley can see that. After she humbled herself before Stanley, she was a changed person. She no longer needs to be compelled to do something. That changed when she saw the good others are doing and being shown what she had exactly done to those innocent lives.

This change does not go unnoticed. April tells Stanley that she is going to try something. She has secretly release Gurtrude from servitude.

After she releases Gurtrude, Gurtrude shows no sign of reverting back. She still will word poke at April but she it truly changed. On one mission, to save a cast out child, a zero that was tossed out like garbage at only age two by the father, Gurtrude gets enraged to the point that she now wants to kill him.

They save the child and Gurtrude has fallen in love with it but still has the anger. While the child sleeps and Stanley watches over her. April takes Gurtrude to the white room and tells her that she is going to show her the world that she now has created with her new found compassion.

Gurtrude is now on that same world that she long ago was sent on vacation. The whole world was full of life. Laughter could be heard all around her. Children came up to her and ask her “Come play with us.” She does. They play freely without any fear, then they take her to their home and there is that child grown up with a husband. The woman looks at Gurtrude and says to her “Mom, I hope they did not tire you out.”

With that, she is back in the white room and she was crying without caring. April tells her that is the change you have made. That is your doing. That world that was baren, lifeless is now a paradise. One person, you, changed it.

Gurtrude now asks if she could adopt the child and be released from servitude.

April laughs, “I released that months ago without telling you.”

Gurtrude looks at April and with a straight face says “Bitch,” then they both break out in a laugh. April now tells her that it is time for her to fulfill what is her destiny and make that world happen. They go back to Stanley and the child.

April gets all formal. Walks up to Gurtrude. “

“A long time ago, I wanted to kill a woman named the matron. I was stopped by the god of fate who gave me Stanley. I named that woman Gurtrude and made her eat a stale loaf of bread. I worked that woman but now that woman, Gurtrude, has disappeared. I called her that as a joke.

The woman standing before me is not a joke. Your name from your birth to your death has been changed to Destiny. Destiny, you have a home in that area you saw. Your daughter, and April points to the child, now only knows you as her loving mother. That strong box you had is now in the basement of your home. It is a treasure chest full. You have filled it yourself with the compassion you now have.

You will not kill that father but know this, you will see him and openly laugh. He will never recognize your daughter as the one he threw out but the god of fate has visited him. You will know him and as I said, you will realize why I said that you will laugh.”

With that they are standing in front of her home. It is in a prominent place near the center of town. People are walking by and fondly greeting her. They do not see April and Stanley.

She tells Destiny that they only see her. You are a widower, who’s husband made a fortune. You have made good use of it by aiding the community. You are the patron of the orphanage in town. You drove out the old matron for being evil. You smashed the measuring devise and found people with the same compassion that you have.

That treasure chest will never run out. You will find homes for almost all the children but there will be five that haven’t found homes that you will adopt. You will be the most liked person in this world. Your example will make those who are like minded to do exactly what you are doing with the same results. You will change this world.

April draws her into a hug and whispers in her ear “Thank you for doing this.” April and Stanley vanish. Destiny is holding her daughter’s hand. She is asked by the daughter,

“Who were those two?”

She is told that those two were gods. Then she takes her up to their home.

“We need to eat then we are going to visit those children.”

As she is walking up to the home, she sees a tattered hobo walking by. She pulls out a few silvers and hands them to the man. Then turns back towards the home and is laughing with her daughter.

They had a wonderful lunch and then started to walk to the orphanage. As they are walking, the mayor of the town approached Destiny. Tipped his hat as he bowed slightly.

He was not an older man, she would guess that they are about the same age. He seemed friendly and she had to defer to him knowing her. Maybe.

“Let me guess. You two are out for a walk,” he is talking, jovially, like he is a psychic as he continues. “By your direction, you and Trish are going to the orphanage.”

Feigning ignorance, “How did you know, Gerald?”

“Destiny, my lady, you make that trek every other day. May I walk with you two lovely lady’s a spell?”

She is amazed how quickly she is falling into the role, when she hears an answer in her head.

“You were always destined for this role. You just got sidetracked. I have given you the ability to act normal. I told you that I would be watching you. This man is hooked on you, not your money or position. Go for it.”

Yes, she did make it totally clear that she would be watching.

“You may accompany us. We may need protection from the more nefarious types. I need to stop at the bakery on the way. One of the children is having a birthday today and I need a cake delivered.”

“Knowing how loved they are, the bakery probably knows and has one on its way..”

He is grinning as he continues to chat.

“My late wife died almost at the same time your husband died, bad winter that year. We lost a few then. I don’t have anyone at home. The hardest thing I can’t get used to is not having someone to casually talk to that will listen like you do. I enjoy our conversations immensely. I hope you don’t mind me being a pest.”

“If you were a pest,” as she lightly swats his shoulder, “I would have used a swatter or a rolled up newspaper and squashed you like a bug.”

She said it in such a way that Trish laughed, then they all laughed.

He was right. The bakery has had the cake delivered. They know all of their birthdays. The second they hear of a new child being taken in, they send someone to get the information. Most of the shops do.

It is an unofficial network. Each shop talks to couples passing through, that have no children, about who there is available. It has to be couples. That is why Gerald has not adopted. They do have some that go up to the orphanage with high hopes and come away with those hopes fulfilled.

They walk for a while and the mayor excuses himself because someone called with a problem.

She hears her mind say take a chance. This time she knows that it is her own thought. “Gerald, dinner is at six. Would you like to join us?”

He smiles ear to ear as he says “I’ll be there.”

Destiny is happy.
