Not two for long

After Destiny left, Stanley and April do not travel alone for too long before the next pull. That led to that horror show. There are mostly dying children there. They are the victims of a greedy matron. This time, unlike all the others, this one is the essence of pure evil.

April knows that there is no redemption for her. She takes the woman directly to that burned out world that was shown to Destiny. Without even an explanation, she changes the woman to immortal and does not need to eat or drink. Then leaves her.

Yet another example for future ones that may be salvageable.

The children are mostly in dire need of nutrition. Stanley now has enriched thin soup and is having the ones that still can feed themselves, do just that. Stanley and I feed the rest by hand.

He found that one of the bed ridden girls had a stick hidden under her bed. He knew that it was her only possession and was valuable to her. Taking the stick from under the bed, Stanley lovingly gives it to her.

“Keep this close.” he tells her, “It is your friend, but not your only one. Your future is destined to be wonderful.”

She hugs the stick and drifts off to sleep.

Thank the gods, we only lost one but the child was warm and comfortable with sweet dreams as he passed. He is now in the god of mercy’s hands.

The remaining gain strength and the now even the hard ones have been placed in their new families. The remaining five have been nurtured by us and want to follow us.

The original ones that were helping us while it was Gurtrude, were all taken in by loving families. Even the ones that were functional. Those were also adopted. They especially emitted pure love.

Stanley and I have been traveling for many years now. He is doing more and more. His powers are coming up to and I now see that he will shortly exceed my level. That is why I called him over.

“My son, I see that now you are a man of great stature. You are at the age where I took my rank as demigod. I now need you to take those children and form them into your own following. Over the next few years, I want you to come to the forefront and I will start to fade into the back ground.

This role, you will find as I did, is hard on the soul. All the misery is counterbalanced with the joy of the rescued. The weight is those that we could not save. We are not allowed to go back in time. A demigod has limitations. You have always known that you would inherit the title and all that goes with it. I hope that I have done right by you but I cannot help but have sorrow in my heart for putting you in this position.

Now is the point in your life. The point where the decision will be yours and yours alone. Do you want the role as demigod or would you like to go on to a normal life? Before you answer, know this, your answer is binding. The gods accept either but either is final. If you choose normal, you will immediately have that. If you choose to take my role when I step down, you will have it.”

I did not have to wait. Stanley answered that he wants the role that he has trained for. So I ask the most important question, why?

“Mom, you have shown me nothing but kindness. You have made it so I could feed the children. You have shown me that we cannot save all of the children but we can change things for the better. Even the gods do not save everyone. I have learned that the ones that we cannot save, are a lesson to those we do. The smiles on those faces as they went on to their next life showed that we can help even when we can’t save. The ones that we do save, have those faces burned into their memories and they will teach those they interact with that lesson. I am happy mom and want the role but I hope that it is only in the far future.”

That last was Stanley putting on a brave front. She knew it. He could see that it was taking its toll on her. She felt it. It has been a little over eleven years they have traveled together. A year since they let Destiny go. She knew that she had more to show him. But she also knew that this role would ultimately get to her.

After all time wears everyone down. This role though grinds you faster. You get that boost in your score but she knows that the score is only for show. It does not ease the grind. Every lost one adds more weight.

“Stanley, my son, you have made your choice. Know this, it will be around another ten years until I can no longer perform the role. Sooner if the gods desire it. Now I will give you an ability that was locked away in me. I could not use it because it was reserved for you when you were almost ready to take on the mantle. The power is understanding abilities. You need it to start assembling your retinue. They will be the ones that will carry you to the point of outshining me. The power is the army of the righteous.”

I unlock it and he immediately knows what it does.

“My son, you now need to assemble your army. The ones you have right now are going to be your devoted generals.”

I point to those children that did not want to be adopted or couldn’t be.

“Those five are your generals.”

Stanley looks at them. To the child they are now standing at attention, waiting for Stanley to acknowledge them. They all know that they will not be disappointed even if they are not chosen as a general but allowed to follow him.

“Now go and choose but know that they are all loyal to our mission and will follow you into hell itself to vanquish our foe. Each one has a brilliant future.”

I have never seen a more humble yet proud person in my life. My son walks over and talks to each. I don’t know what he is asking but as he finishes with each, they both smile and shake hands.

He comes back to me and tells me that he now has his core generals. He tells me that each had their own talent that he could see without them having to say a word. One is healing, one in courage, one is truth, one is empathy and the last is adjudicator. Each will make a complete set of what is needed.

Over the next years, I have gradually given over the pull to him. As we rescue those in need, we help the rescued to where they need to go but Stanley only takes those who ask to continue with him.

Most of the down trodden older adults, those who do not have anyone, have their worries washed away. Most with a simple revelation. There is a next life in the land of no. No pain, no sickness, no sorrow, no envy, and on and on. That gives them comfort and the ability to deal with what life they have left.

The few are those that will die that day. They are allowed to sleep. When they wake, they will be young again and feel that this life was a dream that is quickly forgotten.

I’m now very tired.
