Not too many matrons

There is a pattern. Most of the orphanages have been like Gurtrude’s. The money, the money. As long as they were being paid for that child, they kept that child. Zeros always were thrown to the wolves at age ten. There are even some that have had children die but never told the government that it had. It seems that the government did not care.

The most egregious were the ones that would sell the zeros and other children if the money was right.

Quite a few that April visited ended like Gertrude’s. The matron, children and the orphanage itself disappeared. For most of the children, there were loving homes but for some, it was not that easy.

Mental scars take a longer time to heal. There are a few that never do. Those like that are now April’s and the functional ones will aid Stanley. All but the worst ones will help Gurtrude with her tasks.

The very worst, that will never recover, we take to my white room. There the god of mercy will take them and she will heal their souls and place them in new bodies on other worlds. When asked about it, the god of mercy tells us that they are usually reborn, with new old memories and will do great things especially for children.

She did tell us that this will happen also to those that are functional due to their trauma.

We have found that there are some matrons that love their calling. They, even with their own salary, will make sure that the children are well taken care of. Even those that are under ninety nine are still kept. Those matrons see a high turn around of children. The surrounding communities will help by donations of time, goods and money.

April rewards them by large gifts.

Sharing her compassion. Stanley sees some of those good matrons that are struggling with getting enough for the children to eat. He sees those matrons going to the length of almost starving themselves to make sure that the children can get something to eat..

Stanley shares his food gift. He finds that he can give that gift without diminishing his own. He has told April that he did not care if it diminished his gift. It fills his heart with the warmth of compassion. He’s the right one to be a demigod in training.

Gurtrude is having trouble. With every child on the brink of death by starvation. Every child that it is too late and can only be given a comfortable end. Where a soft warm bed is the only comfort that dying child has ever had and passes with a smile.

Gurtrude is now ashamed of her rotten attitude when it came to her past.

This does not go unnoticed. April sees that it is now time. Time to drive home a permeant vision. Either it will change her for the better or that will put her over the edge. Maybe the god of mercy will help her the way she helps the others.

Gurtrude needs to see those who she kicked out just because they had a bad score.

She is witness to the anguish and sometimes miserable and horrifying deaths of those who she cast out. Sometimes they may last months. Sometimes they look like they may make it. Most of the times, a stale loaf of bread gets eaten along with the child.

Sometimes even the most hardy die when the winter storms hit. Frozen dinners for the animals. The old Gurtrude never gave it a second thought. Her only thought was the contents of the strong box.

It was her plan to run out when the box was full. She had planned to throw out whoever was there at the time. Then burn the house down. Her dream was a warm climate and no children to bug her happiness.

Now for the real horror. April shows Gurtrude that those sometimes are the lucky ones.

She is shown that some had become play toys for the rich and the sick minded. Slaves to be worked to death.

All the misery that she caused.

Then she was shown the lives that those few matrons that they found that were dedicated to their calling. Children that were loved and taken care of. She was even shown a town where there was a wealthy widow that made it her mission to make sure that the children in the care of the orphanage were well taken care of. The town and surrounding villages welcomed their adopted children into loving homes.

Gurtrude is moved by the misery that she alone caused and is broken by that town where that patron that, did not have to but chose to use her own wealth to make sure that those children were taken care of.

Now April came to the part where she did not want to go but April went there anyways. It was her own past. Gurtrude saw that ten year old almost abducted by a sex pervert. April had Gurtrude feel the fear. People that would not help her. April made her feel the growing hatred. That ten year old was freezing at night. Gurtrude felt the cold.

She felt the elation of finding the cabin in the cave.

April showed the time that a mountain lion got the better of her and the week that she suffered and almost died. People moving into her area. The man who followed that eighteen year old into the woods with the intent of rape and murder.

She had to feel the emotions of that girl as she stabbed and gutted that man and then tanned his hide for the skeleton to wear.

All the lucky and unlucky things that happened in those eleven years. The worst thing she was shown was the collapse of the cave. How it was the final thing for April. How she vowed to kill the matron and then herself.

Then the white room with the god of fate and how her life changed permanently for the good. She then released Gurtrude and stepped back to see how the woman handled it.

Gertrude was visibly shaken. The weight of that and all the years of being with the two demigods have caused her to rethink her life. All the misery weighed heavily on her. She first kneels before Stanly and really, for the first time is sincere. She tells him that he may never accept it but she offers her deepest apology.

She then prostrates herself before April and cries as she tells April that she wants to be able to kill herself for all the misery and harm she has caused. She tells April that she now sees people not numbers.

April tells her that she will not be allowed to kill herself

Life with these two has not been bad, as she looks back she can see that the animosities she had towards a zero has just faded out.

The word competition between her and April has devolved to a poking between friends not master and slave.
