whispered, “Every forgotten thing is still somewhere. You just have to dream sideways.”
Outside, the zoo had transformed into a carnival. His parents danced to a calliope tune played by flamingos. Cotton candy rained from the sky. He tried to catch it on his tongue, but it melted into laughter.

Outside, the flamingos had gathered in formation, their necks curved like musical notes. They wore tuxedos stitched from old birthday cards and played instruments made of licorice and brass.
The conductor; a walrus with a monocle, raised his baton, and the music began; a symphony of childhood sounds. The creak of a swing set. The fizz of soda. The distant call of an ice cream truck. Richard’s parents danced nearby, their steps perfectly timed to the rhythm of joy.
Suddenly, the flamingos broke into a jazz improvisation. One soloed on a saxophone made from a vacuum cleaner hose. Another tap-danced on a xylophone of turtle shells. The music lifted Richard into the air, spinning him gently above the zoo, above the years, above the ache of time.
