He nodded solemnly, though he didn’t know why. The tamarin handed him a balloon shaped like the planet Saturn and whispered; “This is your orbit. Don’t lose it.”
The Tamarin’s Kingdom: The Court of Forgotten Questions
The red faced tamarin ruled from a throne made of old lunchboxes and lost mittens. His court was populated by creatures of childhood logic; a giraffe in a trench coat who whispered secrets in Morse code, a raccoon who moonlighted as a tax auditor, and a parrot who only spoke in knock-knock jokes.
Richard, age five and fifty simultaneously, was summoned to the Hall of Echoes, where the tamarin presided over trials of memory. "You are charged," the tamarin intoned, "with forgetting the smell of your mother’s purse, the sound of your father’s laugh when the penguin slipped, and the way the sun hit the carousel at 3:14 PM."
