minutes. The dreamer chased it for hours, only to find the department closed for existential renovation.
In Times Square, the dreamer was accosted by old classmates, ex-lovers, and childhood pets, all wearing masks of each other. They invited him to a party that had already ended. He declined politely and was handed a balloon that whispered; “You’ll never leave.”
The dreamer entered the subway, but the train was driven by his fifth grade teacher, who kept asking if he’d finished his life’s homework. The train derailed into a cavern of mirrors, each reflecting a version of the dreamer who had taken a different path; stayed in NYC, moved to what passed for woods in the Upper Manhattan of Inwood, joined a cult of silence, became a stamp collector.
He ran.
He ran through boroughs that folded in on themselves, through alleyways that led to memories, through stairwells that spiraled into doubt. He ran until he reached a door labeled “Exit (If You Mean It).”
He opened it.
