Charlie peeled back the fog sealed envelope. Inside: a dream that smelled faintly of subway grease, wet asphalt, and the kind of yearning that only large cities can ferment.
The dream began in Grand Central Station, though the dreamer had no ticket, no destination, and no shoes. The crowd moved like a single organism, indifferent and rhythmic, pulsing toward exits that led nowhere. The dreamer tried to ask for directions, but everyone spoke in reversed idioms and half remembered slogans from toothpaste commercials as filmed of inter-racial couples with full sets of teeth; a fantasy.
A man in a trench coat handed the dreamer a map of the city. It was blank except for a single word scrawled in the center; “Home.” The dreamer clutched it like a talisman and stepped into the street.
The dreamer was immediately stopped by a crossing guard who demanded a Form 88-B to traverse the intersection. The form could only be obtained from the Department of Temporal Permissions, located in a building that moved every fifteen
