“What qualifies you to be a Dream Archivist?”
Charlie blinked. “I remember things that never happened.”
“Good,” said the creature. “We value speculative memory.”
It asked him to alphabetize a thunderstorm, translate a sigh into spreadsheet format, and perform a SWOT analysis on his childhood fears. Charlie passed each test with the confidence of someone who didn’t know failure was an option.
At the end, the creature stamped his forehead with a glowing seal; Provisional Employee of the Imaginary. Charlie woke up with the necktie wrapped around his wrist like a bracelet of promise.
The next morning, he walked into his real interview with a strange calm. The office was smaller, the coffee worse, and the questions more mundane. But somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew he had already been hired—by something older, stranger, and far more sincere.
