False Recollections of the First Interview
“The Interviewer with Eight Eyes”
Dreams of an irrelevant past-future not worth reading by
devotees of the current dystopia.
Charlie had never held a job before. Not a real one. Not one with fluorescent lights and breakroom coffee and passwords that expired every 90 days. But on the eve of his first interview, he fell asleep clutching a borrowed necktie and dreamed himself into the Bureau of First Assignments.
The building was made of filing cabinets. They stretched into the sky like glass spires, each drawer labeled with a forgotten ambition; Astronaut (Unresolved), Librarian of Smells, Assistant to the Minister of Uncertainty. Charlie was ushered in by a receptionist who spoke only in acronyms and handed him a clipboard made of fog.
“Your interviewer will see you now,” she said, though her mouth didn’t move.
Inside the room sat a creature with eight eyes and a suit made of ticking clocks. It gestured for Charlie to sit, then began the ritual.
