Sira had always been the quiet type. Not out of shyness, but out of calculation. In Lorynth, every shout could draw sensors. Every open curiosity about fire drew suspicion. She kept her questions tucked into the margins of textbooks, where candle stubs appeared as historical artifacts; sanitized, neutralized, made “academic.”
But then came Dalen.
He wore his hair like a generally peaceful protest, wild and uneven. Rumor said he once lit a scented candle in a school bathroom, just to feel like he controlled something. He found Sira sketching candle flames in the corner of her workbook. Instead of reporting her, he invited her.
That night, under the silent railway bridge, Sira met The Melt.
She didn’t speak much at first. She just stared. Flame was less “bright” than she’d imagined. It moved like it breathed. Like it had feelings.
“You’re shaking,” said Dalen.
“It’s just ..... warm,” she said. “I didn’t know real warmth felt ..... alive.”
