The glow didn’t just illuminate. It transformed. Strangers sang. Lovers kissed. Stories spilled from lips like wine. Some cried, not from sorrow, but relief. As the flames danced, so did they, untethered from decades of austerity.
The Council, of course, tightened its grip. Scent detectors. Home inspections. Mandatory “Luminal Apathy” courses. But every action bloated the movement. Candles became not just an object of rebellion, but a mythic cure all.
One councilor, plagued by insomnia, finally snuck into a Melt meeting. She lit a candle.
She never returned.
The ban stayed in place. But the city changed, slowly, stubbornly. Candleholders appeared in cafes as “art.” Waxed figurines lined boutique windows. Even flame patterned tattoos rose in popularity, with the ironic slogan: “I Don’t Burn.”
In trying to erase a desire, the Council had given it a halo.
And deep below Lorynth’s polished walkways, The Melt kept growing, one flame at a time.
