light. The city’s antiseptic brightness felt colder now. Candles became her rebellion, but also her grounding. Her fingers learned how to twist string into wick. She discovered how lemon peel made a smoky scent. She memorized flame physics the way others memorized poetry.

Then came the raid.

Sira was mid-carve on a wax figurine when the door slammed and red beams scanned the walls. Her parents screamed. Her sketchbook was confiscated. She was sent to the Institute for Luminous Reform.

Weeks passed. No fire. No whispers. Just light; blank, sterile, constant.

But one night, as she slept, she dreamt of the flicker. A small flame, dancing alone on a candle in the snow. And in the silence of reform, she whispered to herself; “Flame isn’t dangerous. Ignorance is.”

 

What is forbidden quickly becomes the most desired.
