Chapter 21

One of the kittens whistled the song and hopped up on an unoccupied unicycle and tried to keep his balance. Perhaps, with the exception of those in the immediate proximity of high up Grim Gus, those nearby were likely at more corporeal risk than he.

Dado from Everitt’s Road backed away, sat down, and enjoyed the zig-zagging show from a safe distance for the moment.

Not being anywhere near the center of attention, some strange looking pooch-creature used the opportunity to go into the undulating hall of the neon rainbow. Not Much Roscoe from Forest Avenue immediately had some second thoughts on the matter. But, he kept them to himself as he didn’t want to look like a fraidy dog-cat-whatever. Modest and diminutive ones often get like that. It’s a nature thing.

Bob and Becky from Yale Way used the fleeting and perhaps illusory opportunity to make a studious assessment. They could not unequivocally determine any completely safe areas. While this was initially upsetting, in a few seconds the thought became a source of relaxation and delight; as the “dangerous”

areas did not seem to carry the risk of any fatalities; a purple bruise at the worst.

Some group of dogs must have found a thing or two that was really good, as they seemed to be either in the process of sharing it or having a battle over who was to keep it. It was hard to tell their intentions, but the lack of visibly streaming blood on their fur gave a strong hint toward the former.

All of the activity again reminded everyone that they were hungry and that it was near enough to lunch time for them not to feel disrespectful of mores or in need of further comic relief to feed their faces. Perhaps in fear of a shortage induced by a late arrival, all the dogs and cats descended upon the food stand at once, thereby maximizing the possibility of a shortage.

That might only make sense to those familiar with the 1930’s depression.

With the unexpectedly large turnout of dogs, the proprietors of the stand did what they could, but quickly ran out of corn dogs, pizza, French fries, funnel cakes, peanuts, popcorn, and pretzels, not to forget all of the carbonated beverages, cold drinks, fizzy juices, and tonic in sight. The

temporary problem was not alleviated until a rootin’ tootin’

cowboy drove in a new truckload of supplies.
