PURGATORY

image

We will begin by defining the word PURGE: it means to cleanse, purify, purify, remove from a thing what is bad, dangerous or harmful.

Spiritually speaking the act of purification is not a place after death, in fact, there is no place destined to "cleanse", the only one that cleanses us from all sin and all our wickedness is the redemptive work of our Lord Jesus Christ.

BIBLE VERSES THAT TELL US ABOUT THIS ACT OF PURIFICATION

Hebrews

9:11-14

11 But when Christ was already present, the high priest of the good things to come, by the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation,

12 And not by the blood of goats or calves, but by his own blood, he entered the Holy of Holies once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

13 For if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of the heifer sprinkled on the unclean, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,

14 How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse your consciences from dead works, that you may serve the living God?

Hebrews

9:23-28

Christ's Sacrifice Takes Away Sin

23 Therefore it was necessary that the figures of heavenly things should be thus purified; but heavenly things themselves, with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ did not enter into the sanctuary made with hands, a type of the true one, but into heaven itself, to appear now for us before God;

25 And not to offer himself many times, as the high priest enters the Holy of Holies every year with the blood of another.

26 Otherwise it would have been necessary for him to suffer many times from the beginning of the world; but now, at the consummation of the ages, he appeared once for all by the sacrifice of himself to remove sin.

27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this the judgment,

28 So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, unrelated to sin, to save those who are waiting for him.

Colossians 2:13-14

13 And you, being dead in sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he made alive together with him, forgiving you all your sins,

14 Annulling the record of the decrees that was against us, which was contrary to us, and removing it from the way, and nailing it to the cross,

John 1:29

The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and he said, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

In the light of the Word, the act of purification is performed by Jesus in the life of every believer.

The Bible does not speak to us of a purgatory, but speaks to us of two destinies:

  1. One with Christ in heaven (John 14:2-3 "2 In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; I am going therefore to prepare a place for you.3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and take you to myself, that where I am, you may be also.")

Matthew 25:34

Then the King will say to those on his right, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."

  1. Another without Christ

Revelation 20:10

And the devil who deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet were; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Matthew 25:41

Then he will also say to those on the left, "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."

2Peter 2:4-5

4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them into hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

5 And if he did not spare the ancient world, but kept Noah, the preacher of righteousness, with seven others, bringing the flood upon the world of the wicked;

Matthew 5:29

Therefore, if your right eye causes you to fall, pluck it out, and cast it away from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should be lost, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell.
