Practical Tips
● Weather: Warm year-round, averaging 25–30°C. Bring light clothes and a hat for midday
sun.
● Footwear: Comfortable sandals or walking shoes; the cobblestones have character (and
a few surprises).
● Best Time to Visit: March to May for fiestas and clear skies, or December for the
Christmas season when the town glows with lanterns and music.
● Souvenirs: Handwoven rebozos, clay pottery, and locally made fruit liquors are the
perfect take-home mementos.
Closing Reflection
Xochitepec doesn’t need to shout its magic—it hums it softly through the rhythm of daily life. Maybe it’s in the laughter echoing from the plaza, or the way the afternoon sun hits the church dome, or the easy kindness of people who treat you like you’ve always belonged here.
In a world that moves too fast, this town reminds you that beauty doesn’t rush—it blooms.
And if you listen closely, as you leave its cobblestone heart, you’ll hear what the Nahuas knew all along: that the true hill of flowers isn’t just the one you climb—it’s the one you carry inside after you’ve been there.
About the Author
In 2016, with his youngest son out of the house and a lifetime of responsibilities behind him, Scott Paton made a decision most people only dream about: he left. Not in anger. Not in haste. But in the quiet pursuit of something freer, deeper, and wilder.

He bought a one-way ticket to Morocco — and never really looked back.
For nearly a decade, Scott has lived as a global nomad. From the souks of Marrakesh to the highlands of Colombia, the quiet corners of Portugal, the humid coasts of Southeast Asia, and the rugged heart of Mexico,
he’s followed the unpaved path wherever it led. His story isn’t about running away — it’s about rediscovering what it means to feel alive without needing a fixed address.
A house-sitter by design and wanderer by heart, Scott has found family in the strangers and their pets that he’s cared for, culture in the homes he’s temporarily made his own, and perspective in every border crossing. He calls it: “Living A Life In A Month”.
Today, he calls Mexico home — though his feet still itch for new terrain. He’s a father to two sons, a proud grandfather of three, and a storyteller with a passport full of ink and a heart shaped by the world.
Escape to Mexico Now isn’t just a book series — it’s an invitation to reconsider the stories we’re told about aging, freedom, and the meaning of “home”.
We can’t put everything into this book, so we made https://www.EscapeToMexicoNow.com. This is where you can keep up-to-date on all things Mexican.

TrustedHouseSitters
THS is a very popular house Sitting site.

Mexico will never have as many house sitting opportunities as expensive countries.

When a “Doggie hotel” can cost as much as your two week vacation, house sitting becomes an inexpensive option for home owners.
The house host does not pay the house sitter. The house sitter does not pay rent or utilities.
It is a good deal for all, and especially, if you want an experience closer to an ‘authentic’ stay in Mexico.

Beyond the Volcano’s Shadow: Journeys Through Mexico’s Southwest Pueblos Mágicos By Scott Paton
There is a version of Mexico most travelers never see.
Beyond the crowded resorts and polished itineraries lies a wilder, deeper rhythm — where volcanoes breathe against the horizon, colonial towns glow in afternoon light, and traditions are still lived rather than performed. In Beyond the Volcano’s Shadow, Scott Paton takes you into the heart of Southwest Mexico’s most captivating Pueblos Mágicos across Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Morelos.
This is not a checklist guide. It’s a journey.
Walk the pine-scented streets of Tapalpa. Stand in the blue agave fields of Tequila at sunset. Witness monarch butterflies descend over the hills of Michoacán. Wander silver-lined alleys in Taxco. Sit in quiet plazas where revolutions once stirred and church bells still echo at dusk.
Through vivid storytelling, cultural insight, and practical travel guidance, Paton introduces you to towns chosen not for luxury — but for soul. You’ll discover:
— Hidden mountain villages wrapped in mist
— Colonial architecture carved from volcanic stone
— Festivals, faith, and food passed down for generations — Artisan traditions still shaped by hand
— The human stories that give each town its magic
Whether you’re planning your next adventure, dreaming from home, or searching for a deeper connection to Mexico’s living heritage, this book offers more than directions — it offers perspective.
Because once you discover Mexico beyond the obvious, you don’t just remember it.
You carry it with you.
