Chapter 1
The Reynolds family has a rich legacy of service and faith that stretches back through the generations.
In a small Texas town rooted in their Catholic beliefs, they have a long history of missionary work in Mexico. The Reynolds family serves the marginalized poor with compassion and humility. However, the brother-and-sister duo now taint the family legacy.
It all began with their ancestors, who felt a deep calling to spread Christianity's teachings and assist those in need. These early missionaries embarked on journeys to Mexico, driven by a desire to immerse themselves in the local culture and share their faith with sincerity and respect.
Unlike some missionaries with grand plans and possessions, the Reynolds family believed in living simply and what was necessary. They understood the importance of integrating into the communities they served, choosing to reside in homes alongside the locals rather than in separate enclaves.
Their approach marked a genuine desire to connect with the people they encountered. They spent time visiting the sick, playing with children, and offering companionship to the homeless and downtrodden. Living with the community members and engaging in everyday activities built trust and formed meaningful relationships that transcended cultural and linguistic barriers.
Bob Reynolds and his Sister Ruth lead the current generation of priests and nuns. Bob, a handsome young man with striking features inherited from generations of devout Catholics, became familiar with his family's traditional practices and methods. He often thought it odd that there were more nuns than priests, as the men, through the generations, far outnumbered the women.
The sensory exposure experience for Bob was an atmosphere imbued with the constant echo of hymns and the lingering scent of incense ingrained in him, a lasting impression of his childhood. If you listened closely through the halls of his home, you could hear echoes of hymns reverberating like whispers from another realm; often synchronized with the rhythm of his heartbeat, each note seemed to carry a message of reverence and devotion.
The soft melodies of morning prayers and the solemn chants of evening vespers would forever be indelible in his mind.
His devotion to his faith was reminded by the walls, echoing generations past, creating a timeless connection greater than himself. The sweet, spicy aroma of incense filling his nostrils was a constant reminder that the presence of God was always in his life, evoking a sense of sacredness and sanctity, whether in the solemnity of a funeral mass or the joyous celebration of Easter Sunday.
He often heard tales about saintly sacrifice and divine calling, and from an early age, his parents guided his path to the priesthood, who taught him the solemn responsibilities that came with it.
However, something in his personality, be it his Zodiac sign of Virgo or something else, began drawing Bob to secular life, thus creating a conflict within him. The pursuit of love and personal ambitions started rearing its ugly head.
Nestled among rolling hills and lush greenery stood the centuries-old St. Michael's Church, where his calling began amidst the sanctuary's solemn chants and flickering candles. He felt a gentle tug of destiny, perhaps not the pull that his parents would have expected because his parents nurtured his faith and instilled in him the values of compassion, humility, and service to the Lord.
As Bob grew up, the pressure to become a priest came from all sides. His apparent enthusiasm and commitment as an altar boy caught the eye of the parish priest, who saw in him the potential for the priesthood but felt there was just something not right about his attitude.
Life, as it often does, has its plans.
High School brought a tumult of emotions for Bob, as his charisma and good looks made him a target for the girls. Amidst the whispers of romance and the flutter of hearts, Bob often found himself torn between his heritage's expectations and his heart's desires.
Caught between duty and desire, Bob grappled with questions of identity and purpose, unsure whether to embrace the calling of his forebears or forge his path in the world beyond the cloistered walls of tradition after each passing day brought him closer to a decision that would define his fate and the legacy of generations past.
Now Bob, a High School Junior, finds himself on a date and struggling with the demons of his inner self. He struggles with his secular Virgo personality and finds himself on a date with someone who sees him as an easy
conquest.
Bob and a girl, Shiela, sit across from each other at a cozy cafe. Bob looks nervous, fidgeting with his hands, while Shiela is leaning in, her eyes fixed on him with a seductive gaze.
"So, how did you find out about this place?" Bob asked while clearing his throat.
Sheila smirked. "Oh, I have ways. But enough about me. I understand you want to be a priest."
Bob shifts uncomfortably in his seat, wanting to avoid the subject, feeling the weight of Sheila's intense attention.
"Yeah, I have been considering it. My family has a history of serving the Lord, and I can make a difference in people's lives.
"I appreciate your nobility, but you may enjoy other life experiences."
Bob does not like where this is going and struggles to maintain his composure.
"He swallows hard and says, "I believe in living a life of faith and dedication. If I commit, I will stick by it."
Bob wants to take control of the conversation.
"So, what made you want to go out with me?" Bob asked uneasily.
Sheila answered flirtatiously, "I find your devotion and principles intriguing, Bob. It's refreshing to see someone like you in today's world."
Bob fidgets with his coffee cup.
"My faith is important to me, and I am not sure if the secular path is the one I want to take."
"Okay, Bob, but let's enjoy each other's company. You are very nervous and need to chill out.
Who knows what the future holds."
Bob feels very uncomfortable but says, "I guess you are right, but I need to stay true to my beliefs."
Sheila smiles; "but don't you think you should have a little fun in your life? After all, you are not a priest yet."
Bob sighed, "I must balance my faith and my person."
Bob's situation here is complex, and he wishes to change the subject. Under tension, he grapples with his Christian values and inner secular Virgo traits, unsure how to navigate.
Sheila, sipping her drink, smirks amidst her charming facade. Despite the conflicting dynamics at play here, she is determined to break down Bob's willpower and commit to her, but Bob feels like the Devil is rearing his ugly head and wants no part of it.
"We should call it a day, but we should remain friends. I am not ready for a relationship."
Sheila looked hurt and said, "Okay, but if you change your mind, you know how to find me."
They exchanged pleasantries and parted.
Throughout High School, he did not date. Bob could not help but feel the weight of his Virgo personality, known for his analytical mind and attention to detail. These traits served him well in High School and his independent study of theology. However, Virgos are also known for their tendency towards perfectionism and self-doubts.
Bob, unsure of his future, studied theology and scripture in a Christian college and found himself grappling even more with doubts and questions that seemed to knock at the edges of his faith.
The benefits of secular pleasures, worldly success, material wealth, and the thrill of romantic love clashed with the academic demands of studying theology.
But one fateful summer attending a retreat, Bob met Sarah, and destiny tested his resolve. Her laughter and kindred spirit lit up the room. Their conversations were like a breath of fresh air. He found himself drawn to him in ways he could not comprehend and free from his doubts and fears when in her presence, his emotions in turmoil as time went on. He fell in love with her at an inconvenient time when he had to commit to entering a seminary.
It came time for a decision, and his heart yearned for Sarah. But would his love of God be enough to carry forward his mission?
He called her and said there was something he needed to talk about.
"What's on your mind, Bob?"
"It's...It's about us. I have been thinking a lot lately about my calling, entering the seminary, and everything.
"You have mentioned it before, but I did not think you were serious."Yes, I come from a long line of priests, as you know, and I have always felt a strong pull towards the Church. I have avoided and ignored it, but I can't do that anymore."
"Are you saying you are becoming a priest?"
"Yes, I'm going to give it a try. My family is counting on me."
"What about us, Bob," Sarah said tearfully."I love you, and you told me you love me."
"But I think I love God more."
"You think?" she said sarcastically. "You may need clarification. You are throwing away our plans and our dreams."
"I know this might be hard to understand, Sarah, but this isn't about me anymore. It's about something greater than myself. It''s about answering a higher calling."
Sarah sobbed, "I don't know what to say."
"I don't want you to say anything. I want you to understand if you can."
"Is this goodbye?"
"Yes, don't put your life on hold; move on; you deserve better. Find someone who will give you your heart."
"Bob, why did you let it go this far and let us fall in love? Your God would not want us to be unhappy. I...I don't want to lose you, Bob."
"I don't want to lose you either, Sarah. But sometimes, the hardest decisions are those in our hearts that we know are right. I'll always cherish our time together, but now I must go where my heart leads me."
"I just think you are confused, but don't expect me to be here when you come running back if you leave me. I think you are doing me wrong."
Bob choked up and, with a heavy heart, said, "Goodbye Sarah."
In the end, Bob's faith would allow him to function. Although he yearned for Sarah in his heart, he found solace in the teachings of Christ despite the allure of secular temptation, a beacon of hope surrounded by darkness. He now needs the strength to maintain a front against his inner demons.
