The Secret Contained

Marla had rehearsed it for weeks. In the mirror, in the shower, mouthing it silently while stirring her oat milk latte. The Secret. Her Secret. The one she’d carried like a velvet pouch of rare gems, tucked just behind her heart.

She chose Theo because he was quiet. Thoughtful. The kind of man who wore corduroy unironically and never interrupted. He’d once spent an entire dinner party listening to a woman describe her kombucha’s emotional arc.

So when she texted; “Can we talk? I need to tell you something important,” Theo felt the dread settle in like fog.

They met at the park, near the duck pond. Marla was vibrating with anticipation. Theo was vibrating with the kind of anxiety reserved for people who know they’re about to be handed a live grenade labeled “Do Not Drop.”

“I trust you,” she said, eyes wide. “I’ve never told anyone this.”

“Do you have to?” Theo knew what would happen. She’d find out somebody else knew, and would blame him for tattling.”

“Yes.”
