A memory flickered in Lucien ’s mind. The files at the Bureau—data inconsistencies, transfers with no clear reason, entire profiles redacted. He had noticed them before, dismissed them as clerical errors, but now... the pieces didn’t sit right.

His throat felt dry. “Why would they do that?”

“Control,” Lyra said simply. “Absolute control. Free will is the enemy of order, and they ’ll do whatever it takes to eliminate it.”

Lucien rubbed his temples, trying to force the pieces into place. “Even if that's true, what am I supposed to do about it?”

She took a step closer. “Help us expose them. You work inside the Bureau. You have access to information we can only dream of.”

A short, humorless laugh escaped him. “You want me to betray everything I’ve ever known? Based on... what? Graffiti and conspiracy theories?”

Lyra ’s expression hardened. “It’s more than that, and you know it.” She lowered her voice, stepping closer. “Deep down, you feel it. The cracks in the system aren ’t coincidences. They’re the truth leaking through.”

Lucien looked away. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Lyra stepped closer. “Yes, you do. You’ve been dreaming, haven’t you? Visions of places you ’ve never seen. Symbols you can’t explain.”

His throat tightened. “How do you know that?”

“Because I’ve seen them too,” she said quietly. “And you wouldn’t be here if you haven’t. I don’t think you are here looking for a date?”

He turned away. “This is insane.”

Lyra ’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Is it? Or is it more insane to blindly follow a system that dictates every aspect of your existence?”

Lucien paced the room, his mind racing. “I can’t abandon everything. My job, my friends... they rely on me.”

She nodded, her voice gentler. “I know. This isn’t an easy path. But ask yourself—are you really living, or just following orders?”

Silence settled between them.

Lucien ’s voice was almost a whisper. “What if you’re wrong?”

“And what if I’m right?”

He paused. “What would I have to do?”

Lyra didn ’t hesitate. “Keep your eyes open. Question everything. And when you ’re ready... we’ll be here.”

He studied her. “I need time.”

She offered a small smile, though there was something wistful in it. “Time is something we might not have much of. But I get it.”
