Lucien ’s expression softened. “Then this is your chance.”

As he turned to leave, a small voice stopped him.

“Mister?”

He paused, turning back. A young girl, no older than seven, peeked out from behind the workbench. Her wide, curious eyes met his.

Lucien crouched, his voice gentle. “Hey. What’s your name?”

She hesitated. “Lina.”

He smiled, pulling a small pin from his bag – the starburst symbol. He held it out to her. “Here. This is for you.”

Her hand clutched it. “Is it true? That we don’t have to follow the Charts?”

Lucien held her gaze, his voice unwavering. “It’s true, Lina. You can be whatever you want to be. ”

As he stepped into the street, the enormity of the moment pressed down on him. This wasn ’t just rebellion anymore. It was people – families – risking everything for the faintest hope of freedom.

The rebellion ’s defiance hadn’t gone unnoticed.

Rolling blackouts swept through the lower districts, plunging entire neighborhoods into darkness for hours at a time. Whispers spread —this wasn’t a malfunction. It was punishment. A reminder of their place in the so-called harmony.

Drones patrolled the streets, searchlights slicing through the darkness as they scanned for signs of dissent. Public terminals looped messages from the Celestial Order, their voices calm, measured, unwavering.

“Citizens, remain in alignment. Report all dissident activity. The system only functions when we do our part. ”
