Graffiti bloomed like wildflowers. The starburst glyph appeared on walls, sidewalks, even the polished sides of Steward drones. Sometimes the images came with words:
“AstroSYS Lies.”
“You Are Not Your Chart.”
“Freedom Beyond the Stars.”
Encrypted devices passed hand to hand, spreading like whispers through the districts. For the first time in decades, people spoke freely. Small groups gathered in basements, alleyways, and shadowed corners, swapping stories and planning acts of defiance.
Factories fell silent as entire shifts of workers failed to show. In the commercial districts, shopkeepers closed early, their storefronts dimmed in quiet rebellion.
“If they lied about the Charts,” people began to ask, “what else are they lying about? ”
The presence of Stewards thickened. Patrols grew frequent, drones hovered lower, their cameras scanning every street. Something had shifted though.
In the lower districts, Stewards hesitated when they encountered groups of citizens. Their hands hovered near weapons, but they didn’t draw. Some turned and walked away, their faces hidden behind glossy visors, yet their hesitation was unmistakable.
The rebels noticed.
Corin glanced at Lyra, his tone sharp with observation. “They’re breaking. You can see it in the way they move. They don ’t want this fight.”
“Not yet,” Lyra said, her voice measured. “But when the time comes, they need to be ready to pick a side.”

Lucien moved swiftly through the narrow alleys of the western districts, his steps deliberate and sure. The encrypted devices tucked into his bag weighed more than they should.
The streets here were quieter than usual, their emptiness uncanny.
He ducked into a workshop. The air inside was thick with oil and the metallic tang of machinery. A man in his fifties looked up from his workbench, his face etched with lines of exhaustion and grief.
