Chapter 5
I Nearly Fought In School
On Tuesday morning, the second day of the Weekend, I nearly got into a dispute with another student in the cafeteria during the break.
As is customary, students typically have breakfast during this period before heading back to their classrooms.
While I sat and ate, being an introvert with few friends, I was alone when one of the students from a group noticed me and approached me.
“What do we have here, guys?” The student asked his friends about me.
“Oh! The idiot!” One of his friends responded mockingly.
“Oh, he's eating just like us,” another of his friends said.
“What are you eating?”
“Are you eating garbage?” The student remarked.
At that moment, his comment caught the attention of most students in the cafeteria, and they were taken aback, all ears on the exchange.
Indeed, I couldn't conceal my anger at his words and gave him a suspicious glance. “What did you just say?”
“Where did you see garbage?”
“You know very well that in our Country, we don't eat garbage,” I retorted to the student who was taunting me.
“Yeah, you heard me.”
“What I said was what I said.”
“So, what are you going to do about it?” The student replied defiantly.
Without hesitation, I stood up, and at that moment, my friend Xeyamia, who lives in the same neighborhood as I do, happened to walk by and noticed the argument.
To diffuse the situation now, Xeyamia approached us and urged both me and the other student to cease our quarrel.
Nevertheless, for many of the students, it was entertaining, and they began chanting, “Fight!”, “Fight!”, “Fight!”
How embarrassing.
Only Xeyamia wished for the discussion to end to prevent any physical altercation. Shortly thereafter, a staff member arrived and shouted, “Quiet!”, “Listen up, everyone!”, “Sit back down and eat and stop talking so much!”
“Quiet!”
“Listen up, everyone!”
“Sit back down and eat and stop talking so much!” The staff member shouted.
Due to the fear of sanctions or other forms of punishment, students remain completely silent to prevent any additional issues.
Of course, most students are back to their seats to finish their breakfast before the bell signals the return to class once more. “Are you alright?” Xeyamia asked me. “Yes, I'm fine, and how about you?” I replied.
“I'm fine, thank you,” she said with a giggle. “Okay, great!”
“So, are you planning to eat?”
“What will you be having?” I asked her. “Yes, of course!”
“Why not?”
“I'm going to get my plate now,” she replied.
At that moment, she went to get her plate and returned to sit where I was.
However, I have already finished my meal.
“So, are you going to share what happened?”
“Why were you involved in that argument with the other student?” She asked me. “One thing about disrespectful individuals is that they often think they have the right to treat others poorly,” I explained. “What?” She responded. “You don't have to lower yourself to their level, but sometimes you need to respond so they can find someone else to play with,” I told her.
“You know what?” She replied.
“What?” I asked.
“I agree with you!” She spoke. “Thank you!” I responded. “You are different.”
“I'm pleased that you're not like so many others who always support the wrong behavior of others,” I added. “Thank you so much!” She responded and smiled.
As she was enjoying her meal, I gazed at her with such tenderness that to me, she appeared as a stunning black woman.
Her demeanor and grace were sufficient to leave any man captivated.
Indeed, her manner and her quality were enough to make a man swoon.
Although we are both Freshmen, it does not imply that we share the same classroom.
