She moved to the desk beside his, sliding into it with a soft scrape of chair legs. “So,” she said, leaning in just enough to make his heartbeat stutter; “Did you understand the part about homologous structures? I kept mixing up the examples.”
Morey blinked. He understood that chapter perfectly. He could have explained it in three different languages, two of which Amabile didn’t even have. But his brain, in its current state, offered only a single coherent thought: “She’s sitting right next to me.”
He managed a nod. “Yeah. I can explain it.”
Her smile widened. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
The room slowly filled with other students, but Zoe didn’t move back to her usual seat. She stayed beside him, close enough that their elbows occasionally brushed. Each time, Morey felt a tiny spark of static; whether from nerves or something else, he couldn’t tell.
When the professor finally arrived and launched into the lecture, Morey tried to focus on the diagrams of skeletal structures projected at the front of the room. But Zoe kept glancing at him, and every time she did, he felt that same warm, bewildering flutter.
